Default [Advice pls] Monolights

At a photo flea market today I found a pair of Crown VS-502 monolights.
Looked okay, one has a failed slave dectector (which I don't care
about, I can fix it or plug in a slave or sync). The price seems great.

Is the head the same size as the 302? Photoflex have a softbox
connector listed for the 302, but not the 502.

Anyone know these lights? I can't find much (anything) on the web.

Will finding tubes/incandescents be a problem?

Thanks,
Alan

I've been a full time professional portrait photographeer since 1966.
I've never heard
of that light brand in my life. If you said Photogenic you would have a
winner. But an
obscure no-name light ... I would never buy something like that.

Thanks for the input, the price is very right, OTOH, so I'm willing to
take a risk IF I can find a source of tubes and incandecents.

Cheers,
Alan.

We sold Crown lighting back in the late 70's when I was in retail, but I
haven't seen them since. My memory is that they were a British brand, but I
could easily be wrong. They were fairly pricey as I recall.

Sorry I wasn't more help.

I have seen them before. Aren't they compatible with Elinchrome
lights? I remember they look similiar.

You might want to consider more than just flashtubes and modeling
lights...you
MIGHT actually want to acquire different reflectors, snoots, grids,
speedrings,
etc. AND you might want to make sure the flashtube and modeling bulb you
find isn't some end-of-life last-one-on-the-planet situation. I'd stick
with names
that are still around: Bowens, Comet, Novatron, Photogenic, Multiblitz,
Balcar,
Speedtron, Broncolor, Elinchrome, Paul Buff, etc. I'd suggest (as a good
guide)
going to the Chimera and Photoflex websites and checking out what brands
they
make speedrings for...

George
