Even if the Panasonic GF1 has a totally outdated sensor it
easily beats a current smartphone camera.

you must have watched a different video.

the gf1 did *not* beat the iphone, despite his deliberate intent to
bias the results in favour of the gf1 by not using the iphone the way
it was designed to be used and cherry-picking only specific parts of
the images.

I'd expect most 11 year old digital cameras in cropped or FF to beat a
new iPhone in most respects due to optics period. The iPhones, esp. in
the last few years benefit hugely from advanced signal processing and
general cleverness. But all that doesn't break the optics advantage of
the older cameras.

The only reason there are so many photos taken today is because people
have cameras with them all of the time.
