Default Jump at EOS 5D or wait?

Regarding the current and enticing Canon rebates, does it make sense to get
a 5D now ($600 off with another item purchased) or wait until later in the
year for either another round of rebates or a successor to the 5D. It
rarely seems to be a clear win-win with these deals. The 5D has been out a
while and will likely be superceded before long (although I'm sure there
won't be any real leads on this news until just after the rebate expires..).
I can wait, but if another model doesn't come out this year, I lose.

The 30D is rated higher at it's own price point, but I need a 5D-level
camera.

Thanks.

Well, if you _need_ a 5D level camera, and since the 5D is the only "5D
level camera", then wouldn't it make sense to buy one sooner rather than
later?

Thanks.

If you can wait until the end of February, you might find an even better
deal, since many believe there's an updated version coming with the big
show...

I didn't wait long for my 5D, and have loved every minute I've spent using
it for the last 9 months or so. You won't be disappointed.

I suggest that you should wait until March or April.

Canon is due to announce an EOS 3D with 16.8MP and full weather
sealing and an EOS 1Ds MkIII with something over 22MP. The 5D will
continue, possibly with detail improvements, but at a significantly
lower price point.

However, if you need a camera now, buy the 5D, and take advantage of
the current rebates.

Especially if he has some legendary Nikon glass.

We are really getting tired of your standard answer.

It depends on how long you can wait. The 5D has a good reputation and
history, and while
it's likely prices will go down with the introduction of a new 3D, the
5D will continue for awhile
as it has no real competition in the market and has good sales record.
I can only add my
personal experience with the same decision and added my experience at:

I don't regret getting one ahead of any new model. You can't go wrong
and miss the time
having and using a good camera. Good luck.

Who the hell is "we"?

I am growing tired of many things on this group... Rita is not one of
them.

My two cents.

And highly over-priced, at that.

-------------------------

The real issue you need to be wary of is that Canon do not consider the 5D a
Professional camera. All it has over a 30D is a FF sensor and maybe a few
extra frames in a continuous run. The more I use mine, the less it matters.
Now that alternative lens makers have hit the target with their glass, APS
size sensors are looking more viable than ever.

If the 3D is considered a Professional camera (unlikely) and comes with some
decent build quality like enviro sealing (just as unlikely if it is to be a
consumer camera) waiting might be a bad idea. There is not much I do with a
5D that I cannot do just as well with a 20D.

The 30D (which I don't have) appears to overcome the two issue I have with
the 20D of screen size and spot metering. These would make one even closer
to a 5D in performance. The 1Ds is a sports Photographer's camera. Unless
you really need the features it has which are dedicated to capturing fast
action, it doesn't make sense to me to fork out that kind of loot over and
above a 30D. Shutter life of consumer DSLRs is only about 60% of a
Professional camera too so if you intend to use a 5D's continuous shoot
capabilities, you ought to factor in the cost of a new shutter assembly
every year or two.

Plenty of lenses around now to overcome the APS sensor limitation in wide
shots. http://www.photosbydouglas.com/fun/tamron-11-18.jpg enough noise
lowering software is around now to make the noise in a 20/30D image a
non-issue too. Plenty of people say they "need" the features of a 5D but no
one has really stated precisely what of those features they "need" as
opposed to want so the community could address those features in comparison.
This is something that needs to be done. I doubt, given the differences
between the APS and FF sensor cameras from Canon, many people actually do
"Need" the features of a 5D. Using a whiteout pen to replace the numbers is
one option for such people!
