just how do you distinguish a "rank amateur" from an ordinary amateur. I
am not sure exactly what the criteria is.
Please explain!

A rank amateur has the distinct fragrance of putrefaction wafting
around him, as he wanders around wondering what he is ever going to do
this camera his wife has talked him into buying.
All he ever wanted was a comfortable chair, a 60'' HDTV, a bucket of
wings, and a case of beer, but his wife has to have pictures for the
family he hates.

Ah, I thought it was someone who got a dslr as a graduation present
after completing OCS.

....but surely you are aware that the first thing the OCS candidate
learns is delegation?
He will no doubt hand his new DSLR to a grunt who will be charged with
recording his march through the ranks to that command in the sky.

Could also be someone who got a DSLR as a present for learning to use
deodorant.

OCS grads have a particular odor, somewhere between old classroom,
fresh meat, and athlete's foot, so that could be true.

That would be closer to a dank odor.

OED says

" rank amateur n. a person who is completely inexperienced or inept at a
particular activity; cf. sense A. 17a."

The inept bit covers me, but I have *some* experience, so perhaps I'm really
an "ordinary" amateur.
