I will want to preview the photos that I want to print.

I don't think a flatbed scanner is a decent choice for 35mm work.

For a preview a flatbed-scanner is fine.
I own the Epson 2400 and it gives decent results.
Example of a slide (fuji sensia 400, no cropping), used Photoshop
Elements (which came with the scanner) to enhance the scan:

And as already mentioned scanning (even to preview) is time-consuming.

I can see it for previews. I've used an older flatbed to make
"contact sheets" without a darkroom, it's marginal for that I find.

Thanks for the advise. I am bumping up my budget to get a Minolta
DualScan IV. So instead of a $140 flatbed Epson 2580, I'll get a film
scanner for $260.

Hope to have some fun experimenting with
negatives/slides/scannig/tweaking. I hope there's lot to learn there
before I move to digital in a couple of years.

Thanks,

Siddhartha

Thanks for that advise, Peter. Btw, I have already bumped up my budget
to get a Minolta DualScan IV - IMHO, the cheapest decent film scanner
I can get. So instead of a $140 Epson 2580 flatbed, I'll get this for
$260.

Hope there's lots to learn with negatives/slides/scanning

Thanks,

Siddhartha
