Homeland security my arse.
I sent four submissions to Bret and AOL didn't deliver them to him. I managed to relay one through Alan Browne so it makes 3 he never got. I probably had you blocked at that time without knowing it. Try again and I'm sure it will go thru. |

Hi Dougie. Yet another alias I see. Still running from the boogeyman?
Take it easy on my boy, he's had a tough week. In just a few days he went from being a Tropical Treat to being Raped in Canvas. Personally, I think he should just change his name to "D-Mac" and be done with it. |

"Paul Furman" wrote in message . com... I see the new submissions up although unannounced... http://www.pbase.com/shootin/backlit2 Bowser* - girl on pier Wonderful lighting, another with interesting backlit hair. The glow is beautiful, homemade soft filter, how did you make it? The soft focus filter was a typical Bay 3 skylight filter that I modified using a ceramic drill bit. I simply made lots of small divots, as smoothly as possible in the surface of the filter (on the inside, so the "dirty" side would be easier to clean). After that I polished the divots as much as possible using some very fine cloths. When used properly, the results were pretty nice. I usually tried to avoid small apertures, since that tends to diminish the soft focus effect. It only fits the Yashica, so it doesnt' see a lot of use. Wow, that's more brutal than I would have guessed. I guess I believe now that a little scratch on the front element doesn't matter much. It is a real nice shot, that glowing light is a neat thing in backlit photos. SO I see there are 5 more submissions now: http://www.pbase.com/shootin/backlit2 Colin Donoghue - asian stairway That's really good shot. Nailed the exposure. The backlighting emphasizes the haze in the air giving more depth to the scene. Nicholas Lindan* - dandilion seeds This has both the sparkling hair effect and the 'glow' The Dave© - window blinds This one definitely has the glow thing happening! Shane Wakefield - cypress tree on the coast This doesn't have sparkle, glow or mist: it's a silhouette. That's certainly another thing you get with backlighting. If it was possible to get some of those other effects going, it might have been more dramatic. Maybe with the sun directly behind the subject you get less, or because the sun has already set and isn't offering any more direct light. It's a nice shot, I'm just examining the technique. Bret Douglas - aquarium watching Also silhouette is the main effect here. The haze emphasis is also a big factor, maybe makes the tank seem more deep and mysterious although generally more haze just muddies things and normal lighting should look cleaner and sharper for under water shooting, it's not a problem with this scene. |

Hi Dougie. Yet another alias I see. Still running from the boogeyman? Nice rant, and in order to type it, you had to delete the smiley at the end. Speaks volumes. Now, let's see. By my count this is the fifth time you've abandoned the SI in a temper tantrum that would make a four-year-old proud - I keep wondering when you're actually going to make good on it. What's amusing about all this is, I have other avenues for submissions, but they require more work from me, and yes, I *do* have a life, so I'm not going to resort to them until the others have failed. And most especially, I'm not going to exercise them for anyone whose sole newsgroup contribution is a series of paranoid spittle-flecked squalls about how everyone's out to get him. Get it? People that *ask* for options, may receive them. People that act like ****heads, won't. It's called, being an adult. Check it out someday, if you can find time between changing your posting names. But hey, you can always make good on any one of your promises, and take a hike, too. It may be a hardship for the rest of us, but I expect we'll manage to cope with the loss. And that will leave more time for you to stand on the streetcorners and chant about how jesus is coming to get you and you alone. Maybe you and Glenn could do a soliloquoy of persecution while hurling your medication at passersby. Have fun! Since the first time you talked down to me, saying "Us Professionals" or something to that order without knowing a single thing about me, you've confirmed my assesment of you. That you are a concieted arsehole of the higest order, typifing all the worst traits of America in one person. If you ever had anything to contribute anywhere, it has been lost in your own self importance. I may have my run ins with Bret but when he had the shootin, he was consensious and ran it to the best of his ability. You just do it as an interference to your life. It seems to me you took it on so no one else would get it instead of because you wanted it. Why don't you give it over to someone who actually cares? Or don't you want to see it back to what it was? Since you've had it, it's gone backwards in spades. Talk about taking a good thing and destroying it just to stop someone else getting it. What is it about you that you need to find someone to blame for your own faults? You ****ed it up, take responsibility for it. Turning the shootin into a secret society for half a dozen people who suck up to you is not getting you any points in the popularity stakes. But then you probably only need to look in the mirror to see your best friend and biggest fan. Excellent! Please keep that name, it's YOU, dude. Now when you post you can start off by saying something cool like, "D-Mac in da house!" Who knows, it could open up a whole new audience for you? Colin D. That's the thing, Colin. Why my shots that go astray? For that matter, why Bret's? When Bret had the shootin it was AOL's policy of denying all mail from any server listed as a source of spam. Bigpond has regularly been listed. It's the biggest ISP in Australia so I guess someone some time is going to abuse their mail servers but that is no reason to deny your own clients mail sent from the other 9 million Bigpond users, is it? OK so we get down to the current management and my submissions last year all got bounced. Why? I used the same mail server but a different name (alienjones) and it gets posted. If it smells like a fish, has scales and lives in water, something is fishy, don't you think? -- www.photosbydouglas.com www.weprint2canvas.com If you really must write, use my name at an above domain. |

Just when I was about to retire on my proceeds, too! Looks like the jig is up! And I guess I should go ahead and come clean now. But you know every bad thing that's ever happened to you, Dougie? I did it. Been stalking you for a while now, since infancy in fact. The really tricky part was moving halfway around the world to throw you off. But you're too wise for me! And now, for the amusing part. Know what a self-fulfilling prophecy is, Admiral Paranoia? I'll give you a hint - it's got something to do with the fact that your submission actually, really and for truly in all seriousness, made it to me this morning through Alan. And since you've been such a swell guy about it...
