Default Really High ISO Noise

I'm contemplating picking up either a T2i or a 7D, but I'm
wondering about a couple of things.

First, has anybody seen any comparisons of pics from these two 18
meg sensors? Just wondering how the cheaper T2i stacks up
against the semi-pro 7D in the area of overall
quality.

Second, as the main reason I'm interested in either is the high
ISO range, I'm wondering how these cams perform in the 12,800 ISO
stratosphere... Are the pics useable? Would they be too grainy
if blown up to 16 x 20?

I'd appreciate any thoughts you might have.

Take Care,
Dudley

You can check samples at http://www.dpreview.com/

It will be grainy or blotchy, depending on how you tune the noise
reduction. Clear photos may require some extra effort - brighter lens,
external illumination, or stacking.

Hello Dudley:

I don't mind a little digital grain (noise) in my shots but with my 7D,
anything beyond ISO 3200 is too grainy for my tastes. Just my opinion, as
an amateur.

These cameras have identical sensors, so the image quality will be too
close to call. And neither one can produce usable images at ISO 12,800
except for very small prints or web shots.

Thanks, Charles, that's about what I expected. But, even 3200
would give me an extra stop over the XSi...

Also, for less active subjects, I'm thinking it would be
possible to set the shot up using LiveView and 12800 and then
step down to a quieter ISO for the actual shot. Although,
that would entail a lot of switching in and out of Live View.

Still, I don't like the way my XSi meters the flash in
LiveView, so that's what I'm doing now.

Thanks for the info; it gives me something to think about.

Something else to consider is the handling and manipulation (buttons and
dials and joysticks) of the T2i versus the 7D. I have only used the 7D, so
cannot make a comparison. Perhaps another can chime in here and help out?
