Heck, read the reviews on the Digital Rebel vs the Nikon D70 and tell me
where all this pro-Canon rush is coming from. It's silly if you ask me.

I spent some time with a photo editor on a daily newspaper who told me
that the deciding factor for them about which camera system they would
use was the cost of the lenses. Canon lenses, at that time, were
considerably less than Nikon lenses. If you are buying lenses for
that many cameras it can add up quickly.

Well I guess that makes sense.

The Newark (NJ) Star Ledger newspaper is converting its digital photo
operation from Nikon to Canon. As a result, the Star Ledger is selling
off some 60 Nikon D1 cameras etc

In this particular case (newspaper) they are likely switching to the 1D Mark II
because Nikon took to long to bring out a competitor for the 1D and when they
did (D2H) Canon trumped it with double the pixel count shortly thereafter.

As for "oulandisly superior", Nikon doesn't offer a dSLR body with high pixel
count (over 6 Mpixels) while Canon now has two, the 8 Mpix 1D Mark II and the
11 Mpixel 1Ds (which I use). The only thing remotely comparable with a Nikon
mount is the Kodak 14n, which has many problems and appears suited mainly
(only?) for studio work. Even there it has a projected lifetime shutter count
of about 1/3 as many cycles as the 1Ds. Most pros would gladly fork over the
extra $2,500 or so to get the 1Ds since it will supposedly last three times
longer.

More generally (film included) the Canon lens line seems to be more innovative
than Nikon's the past 8 years or so, since Canon brought out IS lenses. I'm
very interested in wildlife photography and need a long lens for that, and the
Canon super tele's with Image Stabilization are wonderful. Nikon has nothing
to compare to this yet and it really hurts them. Several big name bird
photographers have dumped their Nikons for Canons the past 3-4 years, for
example. You could buy a 500 f/4 L IS with a film body for less than you could
buy a Nikon 500 mm (with no VR of course) a couple years ago, for example. The
Canon was both better and cheaper, a hard combo to counter.

Heck, read the reviews on the Digital Rebel vs the Nikon D70 and tell me

Nikon competes well with the D70 and the D100 against the comparable Canon
products, and the lenses that most amateurs will buy for them are pretty much
equal now that Nikon has added VR lenses. But at the high end (larger pixel
count bodies, super tele lenses with IS) Canon is ahead and seemingly pulling
away. This is where all the buzz is coming from.

There is 6-12 months age difference between the drebel and d70. that is an
age in digital time. The d70 still costs £150 more over here.
