How MS could release the Photo app which apparently randomly fails to
open some JPEGs is a mystery to me.

one reason would be because the jpg is non-compliant or corrupt.

Well yes, but everything else seems to open them OK. It really *is* only
photos that has troubles.

that doesn't necessarily mean microsoft photos is at fault.

some apps try to handle invalid files by guessing at what the invalid
data should have been. sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

the correct thing to do is reject all files that are non-compliant or
otherwise invalid, but that tends to **** off users.

on the other hand, microsoft has a long history of *generating*
non-compliant files (usually intentionally), mostly videos, so it's
quite possible that photos has problems with certain images.

post a link to such a jpeg.

I'll try next time I find one that I can post (mostly I am working with
proprietary stuff).

what app generated the files?

I'm seeing it in all sorts of stuff. JPEGs and PNG's from Snip and from
Paint, for example.

can you create one that fails without anything proprietary in it?

Sorry but it is not really my priority. I never thought much of Photos
anyway. Changed the default to Windows Photo Viewer, problem solved.
Maybe it is something corrupt in one of my DLLs, others don't seem to be
complaining. I reckon MS technical support has got worse gradually. It
certainly irritates the hell out of me having to look at screens
designed for phones and tablets when working on a "proper" computer. I
gather I can install Word 2013 under my Office 365 license, and I will
be doing that when I get around to it.

An OS for general purpose/popular use by people who are not computer

arrogance at its finest.

I thought you had issues with ad-hominem attacks? I stated facts, which
are neither arrogant nor opinions of any kind.

No. You painted yourself as a knight with near exclusive knowledge that
avoided pitfalls of the OS. "Those that know what they are doing" and
then claiming you had no issues because you're so f-ing special...

Well, I've never said that I have no issues with Win10, but thanks for
your insights into my personality, anyway.

An OS for general purpose/popular use by people who are not computer

avoid pitfalls such as that described.

Since those "pitfalls as described" regarding Paint are far from
universal and may be unique to RichA for all you know, your opinion
doesn't describe any OS I have seen. Perhaps you can present one that
fits your criteria?

it could be a corrupt dll or something else about what's on that
particular computer.

one way to test that is try the same image files on another computer
with a clean install of the same version of windows (or a virtual
machine).

It certainly irritates the hell out of me having to look at screens
designed for phones and tablets when working on a "proper" computer. I

mobile and desktop computers are both 'proper' computers, just
optimized for different tasks. for many tasks, a mobile device is a
much better choice.

the problem is that microsoft tried to make windows support both and it
isn't working out particularly well.

apple has separate desktop and mobile oses, based on the same core os.

Mac OS generally. My SO (who doesn't like or enjoy computers much) has
a MBA and doesn't fight with it unless it's a website related issue.
OTOH, her work Windows machine gives her no end of fits which are OS or
app issues.

And while evolving versions of Mac OS may stop supporting an app, it
doesn't outright delete it. An app can (usually) be copied out to
another Mac or volume and run again with an older version of the OS. No
need to "install". Try "copying" an installed app under windows to
another machine to run under a deprecated v. of the OS... (it better be
a very simple app).
