Default Flash photography

I'm shopping for a flash, I'm seeing more types that I expected. One
of the main reasons I want one is to do light painting, night
photography with long exposures and manually illuminate different
areas of the subject, maybe with different color filters (gels ?).

My budget is $100-150, I have two Nikon bodies (N50 and N65). I guess
I would need something that can hook up to the hot spot and sync or be
controlled manually when detached from the camera.

Is there any advantage to sticking to Nikon flashes or can I go with a
different brand ?

Thanks!
AK
