Provia 100F and Reala
Hi,
If the objective is to digitise the films with a scanner, is there still a point in using the slide film? Some points courtesy of Google: - The Reala and Provia has about the same brilliant colours. - The RMS figures for slides and negatives cannot be compared directly. - Negs have a wider exposure latitude, so you can get more of the bright sky and dark foliage. Will the scanned negative turn up larger grain? Your comments appreciated. thanks Matthew |

Provia 100F and Reala
I'd probably go with negatives, because the maximum densities, and
contrast, are less. wrote: Hi, If the objective is to digitise the films with a scanner, is there still a point in using the slide film? Provia 100F and Reala
I've done extensive scanning of both.
Kodachrome gives unbelievably fine grain and fantastic resolution but Digital Ice (a dust spotting software) does not work on it with my scanner. Neg Film gives good scans but if you want to increase the contrast it gets a bit grainy. Sensia, Provia are very fine-grained. Velvia is very fine grained but gives rather harsh spectacular colours. In MF print film is perfect. In 35 I think slide is better. |

From my experience (Using Minolta Dimage Scan Dual III) scanned slides
have significantly less noise than negatives. So stick to slides, and while at it, try the new Fuji Velvia 100F, as brilliant in color rendition as the olde Velvia but at double the speed. cheers, Marko |

Will the scanned negative turn up larger grain? Maybe not so much larger grain, but the grain in slide film tends to be less intrusive. Best thing is to make sure that you are comfortable scanning both slide and negative film. In my experience, scanning negative film tends to be more complicated. After scanning, slide looks different from color negative film. Select film according to taste. -- That was it. Done. Provia 100F and Reala
If the objective is to digitise the films with a scanner, is there
still a point in using the slide film? Some points courtesy of Google: there sure is. Always leaves me with superior scans, less (and more pleasing) grain, better colour rendition overall, etc. - The Reala and Provia has about the same brilliant colours. Maybe, but quite different colour profiles. Reala is far more subdued than is Provia, Provia is cooler (stronger blues versus stronger green and grey in Reala). - The RMS figures for slides and negatives cannot be compared directly. True. - Negs have a wider exposure latitude, so you can get more of the bright sky and dark foliage. Maybe true, but I hardly ever miss that. Will the scanned negative turn up larger grain? Yes (and that's from personal experience scanning them both using the same hardware and software). |

Your comments appreciated. thanks Matthew Try both and see, otherwise you'll never really know what works best for you, on your system, with your scanner. Reala's a great film though, but Velvia (the slide film I prefer) definitely scans more cleanly. -- Regards, Matt Clara www.mattclara.com |
