Mat cutters: Altos vs Logan vs Fletcher
I'm looking to buy a personal use mat cutter, and the following seem
to have what I need and be in the right price range. Alto's 4505 Logan 450+ Fletcher MatMate 40" They're all in the $150 range. Any comments on their relative merits? (Or any others to consider?) Frank |

Frank I use a 2foot steel rule and a scalpel - complete with metal set square and find them easy to use. -- Neil Delete l to reply |

It does a fine job and allows for wider mats. My only complaint is the measuring stops would move if bumped too hard. I upgraded to the Fletcher 2200. Professional machine and worlds apart if you plan to use a few times a week. Many framing businesses fell on hard times over the last few years and you can find pro quality machines on ebay in the $500-700 range. John |

Frank See how they perform on corners - this is the real test, combined with viewbility when reaching the end of the cut. Spare blades are another point - some makers sell their cutters cheap and rip you off on their replacement blades. Notice few cutters have snap-off blades. |

I have an Altos that my wife bought me a few years back. Wish she'd saved
her money. It's almost impossible to setup accurately. Bob |
