Default Close-up Photography with Extension Tubes

Being of a "perfectionist" nature, I can see that only a dedicated macro
lens will really make me happy. However, I'll probably try the extension
tubes to use in situation where I can't/don't want to go the whole route
with tripod, etc. Thanks,

I look at extension tubes as much more versatile but more of a hassle
to use. Also, they don't always get you as high a magnification as you
need. They are also much easier to stow in a pocket of your bag than a
large macro lens. I always have my 25mm ring with me.

Well, "sort of" (get the magnification). The old formula of
1/FL = 1/u + 1/v works ("u" and "v" are lens-to-subject and lens-to-film).
So, a 28mm lens with a 25mm extension ring will achieve almost 1:1
magnification (u/v = magnification). Using a 50mm lens would yield
1/2x and a 100mm yields 1/4x magnification. Since you mention you'd
prefer to not haul a tripod, have you considered a set of close-up lenses
instead ? Unless you use fast shutter speeds, the image will suffer from
"camera shake" (due to the image magnification).

Timmy
