"Another problem with the Pentax D-SLRs is that they use AA batteries,
which may be acceptable on cheaper compact cameras, but is a pain in
the
butt on a D-SLR. "

really? why is that?
if my NiMH die, I could get AA anywhere.
Also, NiMH are cheap, 10 2700mah for $20.
charger is $20.

Well AAs are slightly less expensive, at least in the initial cost,
but they definitely don't pack the same "punch."

The EN-EL3 Li-On battery for the Nikon D70 is rated 1500ma at 7.4v; a set of
4 NiMH 2500ma AAs at 4.8v (1.2 x 4) packs a greater punch. Do the math and
prove it for yourself with Ohm's law: voltage times amps = power in watts.

Those of us with no need for a handgrip containing extra batteries are well-
served with NiMH cells. I keep a spare set on trickle-charge and insert them
when I go out with the camera, and as a last-ditch resort could buy
alkalines nearly any place on earth. Same NiMH AAs also work fine in my
external flash, so I don't have to carry dissimilar battery types.

Different strokes for different folks :^)

Good point. Buy a Pentax and help keep them going. It'd be a shame if
the choice was limited to only Canon and Nikon. ;-)

If cameras can be compared to automobiles, a Pentax is a hybrid between a
cute Mini-Cooper and a sturdy Subaru... these two makes may not be market-
leaders but are great fun for the money.

Unfortunately, in real life, you can't do a comparison that way. The
rated power is not an accurate indicator of the actual battery life. An
aftermarket 1.6AH EN-EL3 are both 12WH, but the Li-Ion will perform far
better.

And of course there are numerous other reasons to go with Li-Ion as well.

See "http://batterydata.com"

Certainly AA versus Li-Ion shouldn't be the sole deciding factor, but it
is one factor to consider in the choice of a D-SLR.

Thanks to all who responded to my original post. I just ordered the Nikon
D50 with the 18-55mm DX lens from B&H Photo. Not the best price, but I know
they are reliable from past experience. This will be my first DSLR (I have
3 other Digital cameras, but the delay when taking pictures of children
drives me crazy. I used my son-in-laws D50 and was happy to see that there
was no blurring when the children moved, as kids are wont to do and I got
the picture I wanted, not a second or 2 later.

Hi Jack,
I just moved up to a D50 after many years of PS cameras. You will love it.
I went with the 18-70 lens and have just ordered a 18-200 to replace that!!
No one told me that buying a DSLR would keep costing money ;-((

I expect like me you have trawled the net for tips and reviews. This guy
seems pretty unbiased.

I don't pay much attention or pretend to understand the technical stuff,
don't forget I'm only a newbie to DSLR. I may well get in to it, along with
buying the anorak as well. ;-))

One of the most biased review sites on the net. A lot of simply
incorrect information, besides the obvious bias.

I loved it when he proclaimed that there was no Nikon D70s successor to
the D70.
