Isn't "eroded by hacks" another term for "capitalism" and "market
forces driving down costs"?

Whatever it is, its not capitalism. How about a variation of 'bad
money drives out good'?

In any business there are businesses that compete solely on price, or
perceived low price. e.g. Big Box Hardware carries a perception of lower
prices, but it is not always the same merchandise I get at locally owned
hardware.
So it is with the business of photography. Also, the OP's prejudicial
swipe at third world people, was a typical comment from him/it, and was
not unnoticed.

Then the U.S., at least, has a lot of shortsighted capitalists.

Essentially all publicly-owned corporations, yes. That's one of the problems
with corporations that have a large number of owners who care only about
making money for the next quarter.

Not at all an accurate statement. You may check discussion boards on
management compensation.

guffaw!! Not for almost a year, but I see your point! But how could a mug
that shape stay upright? It looks *WAY* top-heavy. :^)

And after what happened to that top-heavy cruise ship, I don't think I want
the risk of having coffee all over my floor!
