Default Canon A-1 :: Aperture question - A Bug or a Feature?

Hi folks,

Recently got a Canon A-1 with a Canon FD 50/1.4 lens. The camera is in a
great state, all works great. But I noticed that the aperture does not
return automatically to its maximum (wide-open) position after a shot is
made (as it happens with my other cameras). The aperture returns to it's
wide-open setting only after I rewind to the next frame.

This has no influence on operation, but is it normal, or something is wrong
with the camera or/and lens?

This is not normal and should not be happening. What you describe is
what happens when using the camera in 'stopped down' metering mode.

On the left side of the lens is a lever that can be pushed in towards
the lens to use DOF preview. Sounds like this lever is jammed in the
in position. See if you can release the lever by folding the hinged
part forward.

No the aperture would NEVER open in stop down mode. This sounds like
something gets stuck and is only released by winding on. Theres a fault
somewhere.

Your camera needs a CLA (Clean, Lube and Adjustment). Expect a price
somewhat near $100 for a competent and complete job. Have them replace the
light seal foam while they have it. It's a 10 minute job but really won't
add too much to the cost (maybe the price of the seals themselves or less
than $5). If you don't and in a year or so you need to it'll cost much
more.
