Leica M9 and/or R9D in the offing?

Alan Browne writes: I'm not sure if the M8 and M8.2 incorporate the same moire-detection/removal algorithms of the S2 - but the M9 (if that's what it is) logically would do so. I've seen complaints that their "moire-detection/removal" algorithms don't really work all that well. Post links please. |

But I don't think the basic mathematics is in dispute: if you remove high frequencies before the sensor (with an AA filter), you can do a "perfect" job, but software after the sensor cannot, because the information distinguishing "folded" high frequencies from low frequencies is gone. -Miles -- Twice, adv. That doesn't mean there are not other approaches such as pattern recognition to identify areas where aliasing appears to be occurring and then doing something about them. (How effectively remains to be seen). In any case, such an algorithm would be just as effective off camera (on a PC for example). |

Sure, but such algorithms are inherently (much!) more unreliable than doing it pre-sensor. They're essentially guessing. It seems similar in some sense to smart NR algorithms -- they try to detect true edges in the picture, and preserve high frequency information in those places, but remove high-frequencies in other areas (where it's more likely to reflect noise). Of course, in many cases, the high-frequencies removed are also due to texture etc. Anyway, I'll try to find the thread I saw before, which included some nice pictures of Leica moire artifacts! -Miles -- Cat, n.
