You are probably a minority of total users. Besides, no other interface
is so universal.

It's hardly universal when a lot of people would need an adapter to even
have it in the first place.

I suppose they have floppy drives, too?

Yes, which is good, since I still have software on floppy installation
disks.

I've personally blown resistors and seen resistors blown hot-plugging serial

What was at the other end of the cord?

Off serial ports;

and I have been using them since the mid 1970's (earlier at work) and
the instructions ALWAYS stated that both devices should be powered off.
Bet they still do!

I want to use a GPS to record the location where I took a picture.
Do any of
you know of one that records the location, and time when the waypoint is
marked?

The Garmin GPS12 does this, I have one. I would like such a feature
with a camera, perhaps also with a compass, so the EXIF record could
include where and in what direction the photograph was taken; the
again perhaps a notepad would be better, certainly cheaper.

Where is GPS, what direction requires addition of a digital compass
function as well.

I am not sure what you mean by "where is GPS", actually I am not clear
what you sentence means. Of course no direction requires a digital
compass, however knowing the location you are standing at and the
direction in which the camera is pointing could let you identify which
of several similar views you were pointing at when you took the
photograph.

Do you hand-crank your car to fire it up in the morning?

I prefer technology to make things more convenient for me, rather than the
other way around.
