Default top posting - a genuine question

Top Post: Most of us don't care!

Hi

This is a genuine question, so all you flamers who like to kick anything
that moves, please don't respond.

I'm aware of the protocol of posting a reply at the bottom of the previous
post, or cropped previous post, but I have to say I find it intensely
irritating scrolling down through a series of messages (that if i've been
following the thread i've already read) that haven't been cropped just to
find a 'one line response' or a flame or BS. Does this annoy anyone else?

What is the harm with top posting? Surely it's quicker to read and if you
want the background you can do the scrolling thing.

Sorry it's off topic, it's been on my mind for years.

Apologies for the heresy of the question, I will birch branch myself

later.

Mike

After we round up and exterminate the top-posters, those people are next.

While some people think it is some kind or rule, it is only a guideline
at most. Many times it makes much more sense to top post. Don't let the
fools of the world get you down.

Post top, bottom or mixed as the situation calls for and know you are
right and the fool who objects because it breaks a "rule" is wrong.

Default top posting - a genuine question

Top Posting doesn't bother me one iota. I'd much rather read a top-post than
have to scroll through the whole thing. Especially if I'm browsing with
google, a top-post saves having to open up the specific message. Personally,
if I'm making just general comments related to the post, I'll top-post. If
I'm replying to specifics in the message, I'll snip out the crud, leave what
I'm replying to, and reply below that segment. If i'm making a reply to the
whole message, then I'll sometimes top-post or sometimes bottom-post. If
bottom-posting to a long message, I think it's polite to top-post something
along the lines of "comments at bottom of message" or "comments interspersed
through message". Lets people know that it is worth scrolling through. What
really gets on my goat, is when someone replies to a message, but leaves no
comments of their own (and often replies 5 times), or at the bottom of a 500
line post you get "i agree" or some one-line flame. If someone is so stupid
as to get upset about a top-post, and wants to spend the rest of their
usenet life scrolling to the bottom of every message, and are so trivial
that they feel they must complain everytime someone top-posts, then fukkem i
say.

This was, perhaps, the finest, most logical response to the question. I
agree with Charles.

The time when top-posting can become a problem is when there is a lot of
back-and-forth exchange/responding between two or more parties. When there
is an in-depth conversation with point/counter-point, it becomes very
difficult to follow what is being responded to when people don't tie their
response directly below the previous one.

Short or basic questions/posts that don't get into major discussion don't
matter as much.
