To my eye the land and ship lights are distracting. I am trying to get
the water not looking so dirty.

In my opinion, that is a very strong photo. (I will not discuss
technical aspects, as others here are more qualified to comment on
sharpening, etc. My monitor is what it is: not calibrated to anything
other than my preference. My comments are on composition.)

While the boat is centered left-to-right (boring), Liberty is looking to
the left, where you left more space for her gaze. If Liberty weren't
there and the photo was simply of the boat, the photo would be just
another snapshot. Offsetting Liberty and providing more space for her
look makes it stronger. Everything about the photo directs the viewer's
gaze "over there".

The brightest sky is behind her crown and torch, accenting them more,
and drawing the eye to Liberty. The high jets of water to the right seal
off that side of the photo. The three jets to the left are aimed in the
direction of her gaze. The straight-up jets near the center break up a
bit of the sky.

It is a powerful photo of a national icon. After Messrs Cooper and Duck
tell you how to correct the technical aspects, you should
display/compete this photo. Don't muck it up!

Cooper - this one - doesn't do that. I am not one who normally
re-works someone else's photographs, and I really don't like it done
to mine. I do make exceptions, but not often.

What I will do is critique a photograph.

I could critique this one, but I suspect that this was a shot that was
only available briefly and from a limited perspective. It would have
been a better shot if wider - much wider - so the water streams were
completely within the frame.


I have much wider versions.

That would require the photographer to either be further away or have
a wider lens in place. Peter couldn't very well steer the ferry away,
and may not have had the time or ability to put on a wider lens.

Fortunately I had the time, and the lens. I was using my 28-300. As I
said in my reply to Ken Hart, this was a photo cruise, and we made
several passes at that scene. The problem with my wider angle shots is
that there wee other boats in the area that I did not want in the scene.
Also, as you probably know, I have a strong preference for tighter
shots. Here, I have the luxury of multiple shots to pick from.

BTW did you notice that there were no birds flying that night. ;-)

Sometimes we have to take what we can get, and that can be a pretty
good result.

I like it. The clearest elements in the picture are Lady Liberty and the
flag, the balance is good, and even the yellowish color gamut adds a
nice touch. Good going!

I'm trying to photographically convey what I felt when I was watching
the scene unfold. One of the photographers on the boat stated that he
had been shooting the harbor for over ten years and had never seen the
fireboat putting on its display near the Statue at sunset. My guess that
the display was in commemoration of D Day. The boat captain said he did
not know it would happen. The display was indeed a complete, and
pleasant surprise to all.

I don't really like the way it turned out, but it's different from the

Why the high ISO, BTW?


Low light shooting from a boat, and the lens is a 28-300. I needed a
high speed.
