I think more 'global' stats can paint a more objective picture on
Canon vs Nikon market share and the relative growth and size of DSLR
vs Compact market.

Canon shipped 2.46 DSLRs million, 31% growth over last year. Nikon
made 1.74 million shipments, 36 percent growth. Sony made 326,000 SLR
shipments in 2006. Samsung and Panasonic shipped 43,000 and 36,000
SLRs, respectively.

The overall camera market grew 15 percent to 105.7 million in 2006.
The compact market grew 14 percent to 100.4 million. Total 5.3 million
SLRs were shipped in 2006, 39% growth over last year.

Yes I'd seen those stats for 2006 - couldn't find a link to them.
They are very close to the % market shares for 2006 reported by BCN in
Japan, and those market shares for Canon and Nikon have reversed since
December 2006.

I am kinda surprised that tables turned so fast, it will be
interesting to see if global figures follow same trend :-)

Thanks for the link.

Not surprising given Nikon's intro of the D80 and D40/D40x. Canon's 400D
falls short of the D80 in several ways, and Nikon's D40/D40x are at a
price point where Canon really has no competing product. Similarly, the
D200 beats the 30D in several ways.

Canon really needs to address the low to mid-range of the D-SLR lines.
