Default Minolta Dimage A200, cannot take fast shot

I have a Minolta Dimag A200. I need to take fast, action shots. I cannot
get the shutter to release quick enough to capture the action.

Any help on setting this, if possible, would really be appreciated.

Thank you,
Tom

Thank you Jim. I'll try it out today. There are so many settings on the
camera, automatic, shutter, etc. I though maybe I just wasn't setting it
correctly.

Most point and shoot digital cameras use the imaging sensor to
determine exposure and focus. This method is less expensive than
adding separate (and more efficient) focus and exposure sensors.

You'll never be able to get the shutter to fire instantly, but
you can work around the problem somewhat.

You've probably noticed there are two 'positions' on the shutter
release button. The focus and exposure are determined during the
'half press'. The shutter is tripped when the button is pressed
the rest of the way. The shutter won't release until proper exposure
and focus is obtained. This is what is causing the delay.

When trying to photograph action like kids jumping around, keep your
finger on the shutter button. As you follow your subject, start half
pressing the button and letting go every second or so.

This will keep the subject in focus. When you're ready to take a shot,
the shutter should fire with no or little delay because you have focus
or it's very close.

You can further reduce the shutter lag by shooting with manual exposure
(shutter and aperture) and with manual focus. Manual exposure is easy
to set if the light isn't changing. Manual focus is a little harder
(unless you're shooting things that are pretty far away), but it's
worth trying in some circumstances.

Gniewko,

Thanks for the reply. I've also tried manual, but this shutter will not
fire quickly enough. Thanks again.

Rob,
Wasn't told that initially. I've been told to shoot in movie mode, but the
quality isn't good enough for reprint.

Tom,
Manual what? Exposure or focus? The main cause of slow response in
cameras like the A200 is autofocus (it is slow in cameras that use the
imaging sensor to focus). If you use the technique mentioned above
(half-pressing the shutter release), this should be minimised, at the
cost of having to master the technique. I doubt that switching to
manual exposure will have an appreciable effect on the delay.

ACL,

I have switched to manual focus and exposure. You're right, no real
difference.
