Konica Hexar lens repair
I have a Hexar 135mm/F3.5 lens that has a stuck blade in the iris.
Is this something that can be easily repaired? I figure the lens doesn't work now so what harm can I do? I seem to recall seeing a guide to disassembling these lenses on the web once but I can't find it now, can anybody help me out? Thanks. Dave |

Add the 57mm 1.4 hexanon AR to that list (for konica auto-T). my grandfather gave me his old setup which included an autoreflex T and 57mm 1.4 lens. it is pretty heavy but focussing with this lens is an absolute pleasure. very bright and microprism with split image centre. the only problem is that the lens focus will not go to infinity (when set to infinity it is focussed for about 20 feet). since i have other 35mm SLRs it is not worth it to me to pay the money to get this fixed, id like to attempt to fix this myself if there is little risk of damaging the elements. |

Lazily cuts and pastes his story from another thread... (O;
If you are experienced in technical repairs, then you might want to have a go - if a professional repair is too expensive and you are going to toss the lens anyway, what do you have to lose? (O; Getting at the guts of a non-zoom is usually not *horrifyingly* difficult.... But reassembly of iris blades.. yeeuch.. If you do go ahead, work on a large white sheet, go slowly and think about each step carefully, be very afraid of anything that looks like a spring (boing, where did that go?), note everything you do, eg the exact position of sliding collars, and if you unscrew a helicoid, note exactly how it aligns when it comes free - often there will be several threads you can align with, and only one will be the right one! Use extra care when cleaning up/replacing any grease, obviously if *any* gets in the wrong place the lens may be history. Naphtha (lighter fluid - use appropriate precautions and do not inhale it!) is the best way to clean up remnants of grease, by the way, and it is even safe on most lens coatings (but don't deliberately put it there!). To replace the lens grease, feel what was there to get an idea of how thick it should be, and then whatever grease you get, make sure it is of the non-creeping variety!! Do NOT thin the grease with spray lubricants or light oil, as these WILL creep!! If in doubt about any of this, or if it is a valuable lens, don't even think about doing it yourself! As an example, I (immodestly) regard myself as a fairly good technician, with a background in mechanical engineering and electronics.. It took me about 12 hours in total, with one unsuccessful go (hence the helicoid tip!), to perform a full dissassembly and repair of a Tamron 70-150 zoom. It had a loose internal element, rght at the centre of the dam thing!, that was affecting its performance. It was pretty scary and I was very thankful it was an old-fashioned manual focus, non-electronic-anything lens. At the end of the process I had a fully working lens that still serves me well some ten years later, along with a healthy respect for the effort that goes into putting one of these together. Since then I have only dissassembled a few primes, which were a lot less challenging. Your mileage may vary.....dramatically! |

Dave,
If you are going to look at other lenses to get an idea, you might want to check out the following post: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/konicaslr/message/7877 which at least is on a Hexanon lens. But read what has to say also, because it's very important! Mike "dave" wrote in message ups.com... I have a Hexar 135mm/F3.5 lens that has a stuck blade in the iris.
