Thus the quotation marks. ;-)

There are many books with formulas.

Look for an old copy of the Photo Lab Index from about 1940-1955.

Also see Photographic Facts and Formulas by Wall.

You need an Ohus triple-beam scale.

Most developers for paper use:

Sodium Sulphite
Sodium Carbonate
Metol
Hydroquinone
Potassium Bromide

Most developers for film use:

Sodium Sulphite
Borax or Sodium Carbonate
Metol or Phenidone
Hydroquinone
Potassium Bromide

Very small amounts of most of these are used (1-5 g/l), except
carbonate for paper developers and sulphite for both. 100g quanities
will suffice for most purposes, but sulphite and carbonate should be
bought in kilogram quantities or better to get a decent price.

I'm still new at this stuff. How did you figure this all out? And
where can I get these ingredients? Phenodine doesn't sound like
something I can pick up at the grocery.

Also be aware that some of the ingredients have other uses that are not
socially acceptable, and may lead to unwanted curiosity on the part of
local authorities.
