Default Capture NX

Can you use Capture NX with a D700 .NEF file, when you have the
Capture NX2 trial on the same computer? I tried and I get a message
saying that it cannot load the file but I can still load .NEF files
created by the D300.

Capture NX is not compatible with D700 .nef files. Development and
updates of NX ended with the release of NX2, which predated D700.

NX IS compatible with your D300.

NX2 is well worth the price of the upgrade. I also own D700 and
D300 bodies, and use NX2 almost exclusively. Clean, handles well,
with a small, but quickly assimilated learning curve.

If NX is no longer being updated, what should be used in its place?
(For now, with my D3.)

If I upgraded to NX2, would I still be able to use the
numerous Settings Files I generated with NX?

Thanks,
Mike.

Good question. Nikon's website has a trial version of NX 2
available for download. Go for it. All your questions will be
answered with direct hands-on.

There's a hack program he
http://home.comcast.net/~nikond70/Do...k/D700Hack.htm
that changes the model number in the header of the D700 nef files to D3,
so they should open with Capture NX 1.**

I haven't tried this. Back up any nef file before trying.

There are a few changes/improvements with NX2. Batch processing is
/much/ faster. Integration with View NX is better. An upgrade version
rather than full should still be available, even if the version of NX
1.** you have came free with the D300.

Just out of curiosity, is it still based on .net software?

I presume so.
A while ago I did some comparisons using NX and NX2 on several machines
running XP and Vista, (32 bit) with different RAM and HD configurations,
and different CPUs. Not "100% scientific", but for a standard operation
- open an *nef, do a standard edit, and save file;
A 1.6ghz basic dual core machine was about twice as fast as a 3.0 GHz P4
with HT.
No significant difference between 2 and 3 GB ram.
Shifting the NX cache to a separate physical otherwise empty sata drive
made no difference at all.
NX 1 and 2 were about the same speed for single file operations. If one
was slower to render an edit (NX1), it was correspondingly faster to
save the edited file.
For batch processing NX2 was /much/ faster - about 4x.
NX in Vista wasn't slower than in XP.

I don't think any NX version supports more than 2 CPU cores. If that's
the case, then for best performance for NX, then the fastest dual core
machine might give better results than much more expensive quad core
running at slower speed per core. Any 2 GHz C2D with 12 mp nef files
seemed to give pretty satisfactory performance - slowest operation is
still noise reduction - better quality, where the lag may be a few seconds.
But when NX was released, multi-core CPUs were "exotic" - not what most
amateur photographers had to use at home. No wonder many people gave up
on Capture NX in horror.

That needs to be qualified - the basic dual core machine was a T 2330 or
similar pentium dual core (but not C2D, and not an "atom")
