On occasion, black oilers too! Maybe they have bad ant days
;-)

I grew up hating birds. Blame Hitchcock.
Now I find myself spending a lot of time photographing them.
I used to shoot them with a Crosman or a slingshot.
Now I use a Canon.

We see them for a few days spring and
fall as the pass through the Bruce Peninsula.
Our lawn is a virtual ant farm. Like most
woodpeckers they are quite smart and
fun to watch.

They will eat from the suet we put on
the trees.

Yes, they are part of the woodpecker family. They are gorgeous
birds. They can climb up the trunks of trees and hammer on wood like
woodpeckers, but I noticed they prefer to find food on the ground,
like ants.

For a long time I thought it was some sort of quail because every time
I'd see them they would fly up from the ground.

They should call it a Ruby-Crested Spotted Quailpecker.

I have Tammie and often at that. They also raid the bird feeder here
going after ant's foraging in the fruit & nut mix, opportunistic guys.

Very nice capture too she has there.

Nah, stop yanking our chain.

"Now I use a Canon."
And thank you for that.

ps.com... I've been
chasing these guys for months, but finally got a good shot
of one yesterday in a magnolia tree.

Any ID help will be greatly appreciated.

No. Ants find food in my kitchen, on the chopping block, or in the garbage
can.........

That's quite a jump....Seems like you might have tried a machine gun and/or
a howitzer first......

A 400 mm cannon is a whopping big gun! Seriously, that's a whopping big
lens. I have a 500 mm mirror lens for my Minolta, fixed f/8, but it's
probably harder to hold it steady than your longer, heavier lens. You
use it superbly.
