Is the focussing screen on an FG interchangable with an FE ?
Hi Folks,
I am new to the list as I have just inherited a very nice Nikon FE. However the focussing screen is very dull and it is just the plain matte screen. I plan to give the camera to my son and would prefer the split image screen. I have access to an old FG and was wondering if they were compatible. |

I thought that the screen on these cameras was not removable. Jim |

FG screens are fixed and not interchangeable, nor compatible with any other Nikon viewfinder. You can still find K-type screens for the FM/FE/FA series. Go to Adorama (adorama.com) and search for "nikon k screen fe". Unfortunately, the Beattie screens are running about $100. There's a used K2 screen available, as well. Mind you, any non-original "K" series screens will require some exposure compensation, as Nikons meter in the viewfinder after light has passed through the focusing screen. A brighter screen of the K2, K3, or Beattie type will result in underexposed images in an original FE. If what you have is an FE2, however, no compensation is required with the K2/3 screens - only with the Beattie BrightScreens. You may also wish to look on eBay. -- Central Maryland Photographer's Guild - http://cmpg.org Strange, Geometrical Hinges - http://rob.rnovak.net |
