Would it be possible for Sigma to top the incredible SD10? I suppose that anything called SD11 might give a clue. |

From the reviews I've seen of it, it seems to offer some serious advantages. Ok, perhaps discount the body itself, the whole Foevon system seems like a much more effective system than the traditional system that is on about every other consumer camera at the moment. I'd like to see a full frame X3 sensor go at it with the top level canon DSLRs. Cam |

Since GP posted that the sensor is 16.8 megapixels, you have to apply the GP factor, and divide by 4 to get the actual megapixels. If the new Foveon sensor is only 4.2 megapixels then Foveon is through; it's too small of an increase when the competition is at 6 megapixels and moving to 8 megapixels in prosumer and amateur D-SLRs. If it's truly 12.6 or 16.8 megapixels (not 12.6 or 16.8 megasensors) then they have a chance. Foveon's only hope is a full frame sensor of at least 12 spatial megapixels. The failure of the Sigma D-SLRs, while partially due to issues with the body and lenses, was caused mainly by the tiny, low-resolution, noisy, sensor. 3.4 to 4.2 megapixels is too small of an increase to garner the interest of any first or second tier D-SLR manufacturer. And you're right, the Foveon system seems to offer serious advantages, but those advantages have been elusive. Having three sensors per pixel was supposed to increase color accuracy, but it didn't. |

You're right. In order to keep up with the competition, the number of megapixels has to rise. People with SLRs want poster-sized photos (despite the fact most print to a maximum of 10x8). And you're right, the Foveon system seems to offer serious advantages, but those advantages have been elusive. Having three sensors per pixel was supposed to increase color accuracy, but it didn't. I've been impressed with the sharpness of the images using the Foveon system. Sigma's lenses have been distinctly unimpressive though. -- Yours Zebedee (Claiming asylum in an attempt to escape paying his debts to Dougal and Florence) |
