Default Best 5 - 6 MP current model

Opinions on new digital camera purchase;

Nikon 5700
Minolta DiMAGE A1
FujiFilm S7000

I sold my n90s and am going digital and want a high quality but simpler
system than my n90s and lenses offered. Mostly landscape, sports and family
photos. I want as little shutter lag as possible and ocassionlly enlarge a
good print.

Thanks

Fuji S7000. Almost no shutter lag. Also has 12MP option for larger prints,
best movie mose of all, best super macro and good zoom. Also has a unique
"last 5" continuous mode that is really a nice feature.

The Fuji is crap. Nothing compares to the 717 short of the Rebel.

The Fuji FinePix S7000 is a camera with a lot of potential that was
ultimately a let down in the image quality department. In what seems to be a
trend lately on their cameras, Fuji is processing and compressing their
images to death, causing higher than average noise and other digital junk. I
can live with a little "grain" in images, but when it starts eating away at
details, it's too much.

OK, you seem very passionate about the Fuji being crap but it has gotten
many rave reviews. Have you actually used one? I am curious if this is
based on actual real world experience. I do appreciate your input.

Also, what is the word on th Sony DSC-F828?? 8MP and CF card (finally from
sony) sounds good.

The Fuji is total garbage. I've used them all. They have far too much noise
and compression. The 717 is still untouchable.

Your price range includes that of the digital Rebel. Why not consider it?
You said you wanted high quality and the Rebel delivers. You can crank the
Rebel up to ISO 1600 and look better than these other cameras set a ISO 400.
The images will also look less processed than the cameras with the smaller
sensors.

Sorry if this sounds like a Rebel commercial, but I was considering a 5mp
camera to replace my 3mp camera. I wanted a wider zoom range than my 3x
zoom. For about the same price as the A1, I got the dRebel, 3 lenses and
superior image quality.

If you're partial to Nikon and can wait six months or so, Nikon plans to
release a lower priced SLR using the same 6mp sensor as the D100.

I just wanted a smaller more compact camera package. I have had it with
lugging 3 - 4 lenses, a huge flash, 100 batteries, film etc. etc..

I am seriously looking at the Sony because of the 8MP and especially the
Zeiss f2.8 lens... Ahhh I am so confused...LOL

Wait for the Nikon. They are far superior when it comes to lens selection
than Canon ever was. I would spring for the D100 if you can swing it.

While I agree that dismissing the S7000 with the one-word description "crap"
isn't very helpful or truthful, I tend to agree about the S7000's problems
with noise and jpeg artifacting. Go to
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_...0_samples.html (the sample
photos page for the Fuji S7000), select the picture labelled
"DSCF0201.JPG", then look at the noise in just the sky alone. It's not a
very encouraging advertisement for the S7000. Although the S7000 is
reasonably priced, it's price/performance ratio seems a bit under the
average mark for cameras in the same or even slightly lower megapixel range,
IMHO.

BTW, this particular scene is my favorite one on Steve's site for comparing
cameras since he uses it in just about every review. The scene contains a
lot of fairly busy detail as well as broad expanses of solid color, there's
plenty of light and shadow, and the scene's dynamic range test points
include everything from the highly reflective whites of road signs to the
near blacks of shadows under trees. The sign for "Nicholson Street" in the
lower-middle of the frame provides a good yardstick for comparing a camera's
ability to pick up detail and there are plenty of horizontal, vertical, and
diagonal lines present to aid in gauging distortion. But I digress...

I had been really looking forward to the release of the S7000, but after
*carefully* examining sample photos on several review sites, my ardor was
dampened considerably. Frankly, the Sony f717 is such a steal these days
that even with all the complaints about its color rendition, I would choose
it over the Fuji S7000
..
