Default Sony Carl Zeiss 135mm f/1.7 -- too sharp for the Maxxum 7D

Wide open (f/1.7, 1/800, open shade, WB@7500K, from RAW, Maxxum 7D, ISO 100)

Unsharp mask... note the staircase in the middle, back petal. This is
apparent in the RAW file as well. See last linked image [W/O sharpening])

Downsampled

Section at full size

and that's on a 6 Mpix camera. If Sony does a 12+ Mpix camera ...

(Note: focusing this thing is a challenge).

Is this lens *too* sharp for a 6 mpix?

Cheers,
Alan.

If you're sayng more resolution would probably look better, then I agree.

I'd say there is sharpening even in the unsharpened example, judging from
the dark halo behind the petal in question.

Sharpening aside, any saturated diagonal against a contrasting background
would be one of the situations that would bring out the Bayer pattern of the
camera detector. I would not blame the lens being too sharp for this. It
is an inherent problem with today's detectors.

The easiest solution is probably to manually edit the image to remove the
aliasing. Another possibility is to ensure that all sharpening is turned
off, and apply it more selectively in a program like Photoshop.

Turns out that the "sharpening" was on in the RAW import (I'm not used
to the CS3 version where the "sharpening" control is hidden in another tab).
IMO there should be no sharpening at all at the import stage, only on an
image ready for display/print.

Cheers,
Alan

re-named the directory correctly.

Fixed the problem (PS CS3 error on my part, sharpening in RAW import).

Cheers,
Alan
