Default Time to *FIX* the charter for rec.photo.digital

The time has come to fix the charter for this newsgroup. Newsgroup
participants should be actively involved in governing the groups they
participate in. The best way to do this is to keep charters up to
date, and in touch with the current needs of the community.

WHAT WE NEED TO DO:

One- Come together as a community to rewrite a modern charter for this
newsgroup. Many things need to be spelled out, such as official
positions on various types of advertising and auction pointers.

Two- Petition the leaders of news.newgroups.announce to incorporate a
fast-track charter amendment process into the RFD-CFV system. They
currently do not accept proposals to amend charters, and we need to
pressure them to change that. Other network news hierarchies do have
active systems to keep charters up to date, and the BIG EIGHT should
join the 21st century too. To have any teeth, updated charters need to
be sent out as a control message by the NAN leaders, this way the
charter is archived by ISC. FAQs written by group participants are
usually done by a single person or small group, do not reflect the
will of the majority, and have no teeth whatsoever.

Send your petitions to-

Russ Allbery
Todd McComb
Brian Edmonds

These three men have the power to change the system. Let them hear
your voices, lest our group may fall prey to the least common
denominator.

Yep....I see nothing wrong with anarchy. We have outlasted that flaming a
couple of months ago...if we can survive that we can survive anything. We
don't need to change the rules...we can just ignore them.

(Often we've suffered from the lowest denominator

Excellent piece you write CharterFix. IMHO, this kind of grass roots
effort and concern (community) would benefit Usenet immensely. No one
knows or cares more about each particular newsgroup than its
users/participants, *they* should be a group's government.

I might caution against possibly overwhelming Russ, Todd or Brian with
'me toos' or half cocked rants, as all 3 of them have had their hands full
lately, diligently working to bring solution to several long time nagging
Usenet problems. News.groups topics and quality of discussions of late
have been very productive. And as Russ recently pointed out, charter
amendments aren't the highest priority. From the discussion and context of
it, I take it that this means they are important, but other things need
attention first. Personally, after keeping current with news.groups for
many months now, I tend to agree with his comment, though possibly
integrating it with a fixed voting system may make sense.

Possibly one of the best things to do is read news.groups and
constructively contribute ones thoughts. If one is technically literate
with Usenet and the news structure, one might volunteer to handle a task
or 2. Volunteers are always in short supply.
