umm... 'han chinese' is basicly bogus if you are talking about ethnic
groups, becuase the moment you look at it you will see that its just
a a total hodge-podge of different groups with bascily only having
lived in the territory now goverened by PRC and and speak a language
out of the group that have approximately as much in common as modern
icelandic and italian.

We do read the news. If, for protest reasons, you want to avoid buying
any product from China, you have to shop carefully. There is hardly a
product kind that they don't make.

Yes, Chinese automobiles will be washing up at a Wal*Merde near you soon...

I hope China becomes a prosperous nation. Then they wouldn't feel so
testy about Taiwan. But I also wish they would pull the pins and float
their currency to level the playing field.

Cheers,
Alan

Swings and roundabouts. If, as you feel, they are maintaining an
artificially low value for the currency, to facilitate exports, then
they pay for that policy with the cost of their imports.

Like Korea used to be: Export like hell, but import as little as
possible.

They have to import oil (and that will grow like crazy over the next 5 -10
years), wheat, minerals, wood, etc. But they do not import much high
value material. Most of their MD-80s (DC-9-87's IIRC), for example, were
built in China, not California.

Their currency is currently pegged to the US$ where a large proportion of
their exports are desitined.

The thing is if chinas currency grew in value then the cost of living for
the rest of us would go up cos they make everything as it is.

Think longer term.

The longer term issue is how china will keep from falling apart due
to internal pressures from way different development levels within
on country.
