Any new stuff out there with comparable features, plus an optical

Yes, there is a new must-have camera, Sigma DP1. It does not have an
optical viewfinder or AA batteries, it has something better -- an APS-
C sized sensor in the compact body...

PMA 2007: Another Sigma product revealed at Photokina but
confirmed today is the DP1 compact camera with an APS size
sensor. The DP1 features the same Foveon 14M X3 sensor (2652
x 1768 x 3 layers) as the SD14 and a fixed 16.6 mm F4.0 lens
(providing a 28 mm equiv. FOV). Significant changes since the
development announcement back in September include a hot-shoe
and external viewfinder.

Photos of the camera with viewfinder can be seen at:

Seems an odd idea.

Naturally, just like the optional viewfinder for Ricoh's
GR-Digital. Please note that the external flash is also an optional
accessory. Being able to remove the viewfinder or flash might be a
big advantage for you during those times when you're taking pictures
while standing in the back of a pickup truck that's fast approaching
a low-hanging overpass.

Looks very interesting, I'm looking forward to the pics.

But with such a short, fixed focal length, couldn't they have easily
made the lens faster than f/4.0?

Fixed lens? Non-zoom? f/4? Well, maybe it's the right thing for
*some* use, but it's not interesting to me.
