Default Smith lens?

I've been reading a biography of Edward Steichen, and it mentions that
both Steichen and Stieglitz used a SMITH lens on their Graflexs. I
don't seem to find any infomation on this, and wonder what it is/was
(apparently not just a brand-name, but a specific type of lens?). TIA.

The Pinkham and Smith lens was a soft focus lens of the triplet
type. My memory is that it had a hand figured surface on one element. I
think this lens is included in those discussed by Rudolf Kingslake in
his book _A History of the Photographic Lens_ This is out of print but
larger public libraries or university libraries should have it or be
able to get it through inter-library loan.

I wasn't quite sure when I posted before. The Pinkham
and Smith lens has been resurected by Cooke Optics. See
http://www.cookeoptics.com for more on the modern version of
this lens.
