Default Ilford Multigrade Starter Set Filters.

Hi everybody.

I´ve just bought one of this sets with 6 filters for the contrasts from 0 to
5 but there´s a seventh one quite dark and red wich function I ignore.

Is it a half grade filter?

Regards.

The dark orange-red filter acts as a safelight filter. You can
see the projected image, but it doesn't expose the paper.
This is very handy if you are working without an easel: you
can see where to put the paper directly on the baseboard..
It is also handy if you are working with long exposure times
and a glassless carrier: you don't have to take the risk that
the negative will un-pop because you don't need to turn off the lamp
while you get a sheet of paper ready.

As with all safelights, you need to test it. The red filter in
my Ilford set is very safe for at least 10 minutes with the lens wide
open at normal height with the Agfa paper I usually use.
If you find it unsafe, you are more likely having trouble
with light leakage from the enlarger than any effect from the
light transmitted by the filter.

Peter.
