I was asked if I would participate in a short survey while browsing the
Crucial website. the "thank you" for participating in this survey was
one of four gifts. Without going into too much detail, here is an
abstract of the terms and conditions that I must agree to.

1. agree to receive spam.
2. play ten internet gamse, by answering questions"

Here is one of the paragraphs in the agreement:
"When becoming a subscriber of NL you except that you have read the
terms of service and that your except the terms of it. This then acts as
an agreement between you and Nowlucky; whereby you and NL are committed
to the conditions of the terms.

With your registration, you agree that NL may email you our electronic
newsletter on the email address you register with."

Notice the clue that this was not written by a native English writer.

I seriously doubt is Crucial even is aware of its name being used in
this manner.

In any event, it's a complete AVG scanning on this machine, tonight.

Doesn't sound like you got drive-by'd as long as you didn't play any of
the games.

I'd never waste my time on such.

OTOH, some articles on the LA Times are blocked unless you answer 1 - 3
questions (marketing survey type stuff). I have no issue with that
since I'd never pay a subscription for the LAT.

I had something nasty planted in my machine a few months ago. I think
it may have come in with a toolbar for Firefox that loaded iktself
without asking me. I deleted the tool bar but I was left with changed
and undesirable behaviour in Firefox. McAfee hadn't noticed anything
undesrable coming in. Nor could later McAfee searches (and other stuff
as well) find it.

Eventually discovered a folder that I could not back up, either with
2nd Copy or Windows backup. Nor could I manually copy the file, let
alone delete it. I played around with attributes until I found the
damned thing had tentacles in the registry, which is strange territory
for me.

In the end I called on the McAfee virus removal service and found
myself speaking to a nice lady in India. She logged into my machine
remotely and I could see the cursor of her terminal dancing all over
my file system as she found and removed multiple strange things from
dark corners. All the while she did this we maintained telephone
conversation.

It cost me $79.95 and I felt it was the best $79.95 worth that I have
had for a long time. I don't know what anti-virus software you employ
but I gather that most AV suppliers have a service similar to the one
I received from McAfee. I also had very good help some years ago, via
email, from Panda.

Anti-virus? Quaint.

On my WinXP virtual machine I use the free AVG. OTOH, if I lose that
virtual machine to a virus or other malware I can just copy a fresh one
over from backup...

The free version is fine, but I like that extra bit of protection that
you get from the premium paid version.

You should try the Mac OSX universe sometime. Most of us ride bareback
without that “extra bit of protection”.

Chumming the water?

Just saying.

If you had been following thread once it moved to the arena of AV SW,
fellow Mac user Alan cast the first bait when he responded to Eric with:
“Anti-virus? Quaint.”

I guess he was a tad too subtle.
