I'm obsessed with spam at the moment - getting over 40 per day
now - and further exposure through Yahoo is just not on.

My ISP recently introduced filtering which has reduced my spam emails
from 140 per day to about 6. My own filtering blocks the rest. But it's
best avoided in the first place, and having to register just to browse
is a PITA.

Notwithstanding the current perversions in rec.photo.digital I think a pukka
NG is always better.

I agree 100%.

My favorites for gear information are currently

http://www.dpreview.com
http://www.robgalbraith.com
http://www.sportshooter.com

Folks willing to start, run and fund a discussion group, and
that are _not_ control freaks, are few and far between.

LOL! Phil Askey is relatively tolerant, Rob Galbraith less so
(especially if anyone mentions rip-off UK prices), but they don't insist
that non-posting visitors register. What's the point?

I found CompuServe, in it's early days at least, to be a
pinnacle of control freakishness.

IT managers by day, were they? :-)

The answer to your question might just possibly be revealed in the name

of
his group, don't you think?
It's like saying you joined a Mercedes group the other day and to your
surprise Alfa Romeo users seem to be discriminated against. Doh.

Alan, I think the point is - and I made it to the original poster when
he first raised it - that if the purpose of the group is to share
information about photogenic sites in the UK, why artificially limit its
attractiveness to potential subscribers by calling it a digital group.
His answer was that he used a digital camera, which I find
breathtakingly illogical, but there you go. If he wants to put off 2/3
of the potential subscribers to his list by creating such an impression,
so be it. However, I think your "Doh" should be aimed at the OP, not at
Bob.

I take your point, and you're absolutely right of course - if a site is
photogenic, it's photogenic, whether the medium be digital, silver or video.
I don't know if I agree with your 2/3 of potential subscribers - I think
it'd be less than that nowadays, but that's another matter.

Are you in the USA? I suspect that, although sales of digital have now
passed sales of film cameras in the UK, the actual percentage of
committed photographers using digital has not yet reached 50%.

Personally I would only sign on to a Yahoo or similar group if there was
a lot of highly valuable (to me) expertise to be found there that I
could not get anywhere else. Otherwise, the significant extra tedium of
such a web-based medium, compared with a "proper" newsgroup, together
with the additional exposure of my e-mail address, is just not worth the
minimal rewards on offer.

Also agreed. I'm obsessed with spam at the moment - getting over 40 per day
now - and further exposure through Yahoo is just not on. I don't really
want that worry just to find out if his group is worthwhile.
Notwithstanding the current perversions in rec.photo.digital I think a pukka
NG is always better, though I do admit to using a couple of the forums
within dpreview.com, probably because they're more specialised than here,
ie, aligned to particular cameras.

My ISP has just introduced a spam-filter which seems to be quite
effective (they set up "honeypot" addresses which have no other purpose
but to attract spam, and simply block all mailings which include them in
the addressee list). I was getting up to 100 a day until they started it
a couple of weeks ago, now down to 5-10.

No, I'm here in the middle of Berkshire. I don't have any true figures for
silver vs digital, just a gut feeling really.

At home I'm with Pipex, at work I'm connected via the NHS network, neither
do any filtering.
Just a few days ago I installed Mailwasher at home, and it seems to be doing
a decent job. My NHS email address is absolutely top secret - no way am I
going to risk spam at the hospital!

I hadn't realised that I'd comitted such crimes. All I've done is set up a
Yahoo group. I've taken such stick in this thread it makes you wonder if
it's really worth it.
Prove the link with setting up a Yahoo group and spam - I don't want hearsay
or guesswork (like below), rumour, my mate got it or just plain ignorance -
I want research, provable research that stands examination. Then I'll take
it seriously.
The group now has 33 members (at the time of writing - beats 20 doesn't
it?). It is open to film users. Film users have joined it. I'm one.
That's the trick with groups, they change, grow and evolve with the
membership. I am not a control freak Why should I be? Just because I set
up a group? Frankly that's pathetic and you should really try harder.

I joined your group a couple of days ago after seeing your post in the
rec.photo.digital group (which I have been subscribing to on and off for
a couple of years, and I can say that right now, r.p.d is beset with
idiots who are hell bent on destroying the group. I guess they think
it's big and clever to do that, I dunno, personally I think they should
get out more !)

Anyway, I digress. I run a private yahoo group, and it's quite active
and friendly and has never been used as a target or outlet for spam.
I've never recieved spam as result of being a member of that group, nor
any other private yahoo group (of which I am a member of a fair few).
Yahoo's sign-up procedure has good safeguards against sign-up bots, so
anyone wanting to get into a group with the express purpose of
harvesting it's email addresses for spam has to actually manually
sign-up to do so, and quite frankly I reckon it isn't worth the trouble.

I've found your group friendly, if a little quiet - but give it time,
all groups start somewhere - and I think the idea of a a gallery by area
of the country is a nice one. There are existing groups that offer the
same sort of thing, yeah - but to state a real-life parellel, we don't,
for example, all go to the same pub, do we ? There may not be much
difference between pub a, pub b or pub c in real terms, but we just
choose one or the other based on how we feel, probably at that very
moment. So if you want to try the pub out, you gotta go inside ! No
point berating the proprietor for building it, and nobody puts a gun to
your head to force you to give it your custom.

Try it, you might like it, and if you don't, no harm done - and you're a
long time dead. IMHO.

Really, is that why number of posts drops from 45 to 6 when
my message filter does its thing. Like as if I can't guess...

In Mess's i.e. the solution is simple: Message|Block Sender...
Do it enough times and it all cleans up and becomes quite civilized.

Funny that most of the folks in the kill file have anonymous
addresses. Like, for instance, .
So, into the bag you go, that's it. Bag 'O Rats is what
it is.

Well, if you'd bothered to check with your brain as opposed to your
prejudice (against what I have no idea but I'm assuming as I showed
support for the guy who was getting the crap kicked out of him for
mentioning a yahoo group you've assumed I'm either a troll or a spammer
or what have you), badrats.co.uk is in fact a legit address, and the www
version a legit personal website which I've had for five years. I've
been posting under the name of rachaelnex and rachael of nex the wiccan
rat on usenet for as long as that, and spent a fair time in rpd and
other photography groups (and posted here, too, albeit very briefly).
Anyone who wants my email address can either go to my website and find
it or ask me - the "none" part is a spam trap designed to dump spam,
something many people who have half a brain do on usenet.

So you've just dumped a totally genuine poster - guess your system
doesn't always work. Your loss though huh ?

Rachael
