Macro Zoom Lens for Nikon FE

Can someone recommend a good Macro Zoom Lens for Nikon FE? Thanks, Mike. If 1:4 is good enough for "Macro" then it would be hard to improve on the Nikon 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 AIS. A solid, traditional, high quality Nikon zoom that focuses down to 0.9' in macro mode. This is a good match for the FE. The Nikon 35-200mm f/3.5-4.5 has the same 1:4 macro capability but for the added range is over twice as expensive and much larger and heavier. The Nikon 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5 AIS is another possibility, it goes to 1:3.4, is smaller, and slightly more expensive than the 35-105. Any of these manual focus zooms will match the quality and ruggedness of your FE. There are some very expensive dedicated macro zooms like the Nikon AF Zoom-Micro Nikkor 70-180mm f/4.5-5.6D ED which will go closer but you should look into extension rings, achromatic close-up lenses, and, especially, a good tripod if you really need to get closer than 1:4. |

The f/2.8 is a slightly better lens optically and is also a stop faster. It will work just fine on your FE. It will also work on any AF Nikon body in the future. On the other hand it's twice as expensive and there's nothing really wrong with the f/3.5-4.5. I find the 35-70 range to be a little narrow outside the studio but a lot of people like it. Another possibility in that range is the older 35-70mm f/3.5 AIS (62mm filter) which has a macro capability and constant aperture while zooming like the f/2.8. (The still older 72mm filter version of the f/3.5 didn't have the same macro capability.) If you decide on the f/3.5-4.5 don't mistake it for the much cheaper 35-70mm f/3.5-4.8 and 35-70mm f/3.3-4.5 kit lenses that are sold with the Cosina made Nikon FE10 and FM10 cameras. These tend to go for less than $50 on the used market...you get what you pay for. |
