I don't think it would be pointless if they could make one the size of an
ME-Super etc. One would have hoped that DSLRs (or mirrorless) would shrink
down to that size over time.

they did, long ago. dslrs such as the 5 year old nikon d40 and the new
pentax mirrorless are roughly the same size as an old pentax me-super.

pentax me-super:
http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/bodies/film_M/ME_Super.html
Width x Height x Depth 131.5 x 83 x 49.5 mm
Weight 445 g

pentax k-01 mirrorless:
http://www.dpreview.com/products/pentax/slrs/pentax_k01
Dimensions 122 x 79 x 58 mm (4.8 x 3.11 x 2.28")
Weight (inc. batteries) 561 g (1.24 lb / 19.79 oz)

the k-01 is 2mm narrower, 14mm shorter and 8.5mm thicker. that's *very*
close to the same size (and arguably smaller since thickness doesn't
matter much) and it does so much more. it includes a built-in flash,
built-in 'winder', autofocus and a much more capable auto-exposure
system. there is also no need to carry numerous rolls of film (and keep
them cool), which takes up a lot of space too. if you really want a
fair comparison, you would need to add a winder and a small flash to
the pentax, making the k01 comparatively much smaller.

the pentax me is also not that much different in size than the nikon
d40:
http://www.dpreview.com/products/nikon/slrs/nikon_d40
Dimensions 124 x 94 x 64 mm (4.88 x 3.7 x 2.52")
Weight (inc. batteries) 522 g (1.15 lb / 18.41 oz)

The latest Olympus E-M5 (mirrorless Micro Four Thirds) is physically
smaller than the Olympus OM-4Ti (one of the smallest 35mm film SLRs).

****, with no mirror, no pentaprism, smaller film/sensor plane, shorter lens
back focus etc., I can't see any reason why it shouldn't be!

Trevor.
