Professional Model Portfolio
Can anyone tell me what the standard shots are that make up a professional
model portfolio? I understand that people can get very creative and artsy with their portfolios but what are the standard photos that art directors or modeling agencies look for? For example, x-amount of head shots, full body shots, etc. Thanks for your help. Sean |

Other than a head shot I don't think there really is any standard of what a portfolio is, since it is basically a visual resume' So it would contain tear sheets of projects the model has worked on. Or, failing that, it should contain images of what the model would like to do, thinks she would be good at. So now we have an entire industry, well a subset or marketing niche of selling a portfolio to model wannabees. I'd have a couple head shots, you need one very bright expressive shot, the one out of a hundred or even a thousand. Next a full length, I mean are you gonna make the art director look under the table to see if the gal has club feet, or if they're from some war torn country, has two feet? I would then do some fashion stuff, or product shots. A swim suit, a 'professional' (you know, business suit and a roll of architectural plans, or a jumpsuit and helmet, medical scrubs and a stethoscope etc.) Look at pictures in magazines, look for shots that your subject could do and you are capable of doing, and do that. |

Sean no more than 10 - 20 shots total, and some sites I've visited suggest as few as two or three shots are all the art director is going to look at anyway. So put the best ones at the top of the pile. very little makeup, simple clothes. I'd do a couple headshots, a couple full/sitting, full standing and that should suffice. Poses should look natural and unposed. Model should look content/happy and confident. -- --e-meil: there's no such thing as a FreeLunch.-- |
