Default kowa super 66 and flash

Hi everybody.

I'm new to this of medium format. I bought a second hand Kowa super 66
about a month ago, in quite a very good condition. It came with the usual
85mm f2,8 lens, and after a few days I bought a 150mm f3,5 telephoto lens,
also in fine condition. As you sure know theese cameras have center shutters
on the lenses, and flash sincronization rely on the lenses too.

Now that I've used both lenses with flash I've noticed that the 85mm
lens has an extrange behaviour. Once you've shoot the photo and the flashes
have been fired, they fire again when you advance the film. This does not
happen with the 150mm lens. Of course this does not affect the picture
quality, because shutter is closed when the flashes fire on film advance,
but it is quite unconfortable. Does anybody know if this is usual for the
85mm lens? In case it is not normal does anybody know if it is easy to
repair or I'd better buy another lens?

Thank you

Manuel

It is not normal for the 80mm to fire the flash when you wind to the next
frame.
The 80mm needs a Clean, Lube and adjust to correct the problem.

Kowas do the weirdist things! And don't try to fix it yourself - they
are quite fragile too.

I tried taking a Kowa lens apart once. I've got some of the pieces around
here if you want me to prove it.

Thank you all for your answers. My local repairshop charges more than $120
to look over the lens. The reparation cost would be extra. Moreover Kowas
are very strange cameras in Spain (I live in Madrid) and It looks like it is
the first Kowa lens they see. So I'm trying to disassemble the lens to see
if I can fix it myself. At the moment I'm quite stuck with two rings, one
from each side of the lens I cannot take appart. If anyone knows how to help
and wants to do it I can send photos of the process.

Anyway, I have a friend here in Madrid that had a Kowa and I know he made
some reparation on the lens himself. I'll force him to help me. HAHAHAHAHAHA

Thanks

Manuel

Your flash problem may be with the flash terminal shorting against the lens
barrel, CHECK this first.

The lens comes apart from the front. Look around the front chrome or black
barrel for three to four screws and remove them, pull off the front barrel.
Remove the front and rear lens groups each will come out in one piece. Next
remove the shutter speeds and F stop rings being careful not to lose the two
click stop ball bearings under them.
Next remove what look like two large diameter long screws that move back and
forth in the slots of the inner barrel. Look into the front of the barrel,
see the round plate held in with three screws? Remove it then remove the two
slightly cone shaped rings that the plate held down. One ring connects to
the shutter speed plate the other to the diaphragm lever on the under side
of the shutter. Next remove the mounting screws holding the flash terminal,
loosen the the screws that brass straps under which the sync wire runs and
slide the wire out from under them.
On the rear of the lens barrel you will see a ring with notches in it. This
ring holds the shutter in the barrel, remove it and while holding the barrel
upside down wiggle the shutter out of the barrel.
From this point you are on your own. I wish I had the time to write all the
instructions for overhauling the shutter.
Good luck.
Mike

On ebay in the US these lenses are cheap. Might check to see if any sellers
on ebay are in Spain.
