That must be why large format, medium format and 35mm format
have all died out many years ago, not even being used where it
is advantageous to use such a camera. :-)

The forseeable future (by numbers) is the mobile phone camera,
overtaking the compact camera. Everybody knows that. Everybody
with a brain also knows what image quality limitations that brings.
Especially when not used outside during bright daytime.

Of Course! And why:
both Nikon and Canon will not make any more full frame DSLR cameras; and
why Hasselblad has discontinued its development, manufacturing and
selling operations.

My wife wouldn't walk around with a medium format camera even if you
paid her for it.

....but what sort of photography does your wife do?
What sort of photography does she want to do?
What sort of stereotyped niche do you imagine she is in, what do you
restrict her to by innuendo in conversations the two of you have with
regard to photography and her perceived role as a photographer?
Is she going to agree with your opinion regardless of her wishes for a
particular camera and just be satisfied with your photography wisdom?

....or do you not see her as a Margaret Bourke-White, Dorothea Lange,
Dickie Chappelle, Carolyn Cole, or Sylvia Plachy, or a great
photographer in her own right?

Large and medium format cameras and even full frame cameras do of course
exist, but the numbers are very small.

I wonder what the numbers would be if all cameras cost the same.

IIRC weight and ease of use are also factors. In some cases equally
important as cost, if not more so.

Kids, holidays, the usual stuff which average people do...

Aah! Snap shots. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

What sort of stereotyped niche do you imagine she is in, what do you
restrict her to by innuendo in conversations the two of you have with
regard to photography and her perceived role as a photographer?

I do not retrict her at all. I bought her an Olympus 420 which a couple
of years ago was the smallest&lightest DLSR around, and she complains
that the camera is so big and heavy.

OK! So she isn't into weight lifting.

Is she going to agree with your opinion regardless of her wishes for a
particular camera and just be satisfied with your photography wisdom?

See above. Like most people she is not particularly impressed by large
and heavy cameras.

It is not a matter of being impressed by size (though they always say
size doesn't count) it is ultimately the quality of the shots which
result from the use of the large and heavy camera.

...or do you not see her as a Margaret Bourke-White, Dorothea Lange,
Dickie Chapelle, Carolyn Cole, or Sylvia Plachy, or a great
photographer in her own right?

Perhaps most people only have an average interest in photography and
don't want to be bothered by large and heavy cameras?

In that case she is going to happy with whatever cute, pocketable,
small, light, and marginal P&S she can find, or you can find for her.
Hell! She will probably be happy with a camera phone.
I have some friends and acquaintances who can't understand why their
"pictures" shot with their phone-cams don't always come out good. It's
a 5MP camera in that phone, which is so much better than my old 1.3MP
phone-cam.
....but they are not going to get one of those big ugly cameras.

Most people have an unrealistic expectation of what their snapshot
images should be They want them to appear just like those pro shots and
they can't figure out why they don't. When those expectations are not
met, they consider the upgrade and the corresponding cost in cash, size
and weight that upgrade will require. They will try the other solutions
offered and not be quite satisfied. They will complain about how those
solutions also don't quite meet their expectations.

Is that why none of your snapshots ever look like pro-shots, even though
you claim to use good gear? Every last one of your photos you've ever
posted could have been shot with a cell-phone .... or less.

Nice rant, wrong target. Many of Savageduck's shots are of a very
high standard, and he is certainly among the most capable
photographers who have ever posted to the SI.

Thanks for that show of support.

The comment came from the infamous P&S/Superzooms Troll of many nyms,
and he is not worthy of response. I recommend not responding when he
replies to your post.

LOL! Photos posted to the SI are contributed by anything but capable
photographers. That's like saying he's one of the better cow-pies in a pile
of manure. LOL!

Not with highly active small kids - fast AF is needed. This is why I
bought a DSLR for her and I chose the lightest one, but she still
complains it's too heavy. During our last holiday she even left the
camera at home. Sigh.

It too me many years to learn that wives somehow feel it their bond and
duty to complain :-)

(just celebrated our 50th and have lots of bad images for the SI.)
