[SI] Shoot-In, Teeth Comments
Seems like no one is rushing to "bite the bullet", so to speak, and offer
critiques, so I'll give it a go. First, what an outstanding mandate suggestion! This is the first time I can recall that every image submitted seemed to hit the mandate spot-on. Opps! This mandate suggestion was mine, wasn't it!?! Oh well, one of my wife's favorite sayings: "Self-praise is better than no praise!" I'm pretty sure there is at least one person submitting to SI for the first time and perhaps 2 or 3. To any and all newcomers, "Welcome!" Nice to have you here and hope you submit often! On to the photos... Mardon (Yup, that' me) http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/73632143 At least I photographed the correct end of the horse. Don't a horses teeth tell its age? Anyone know how old this horse is? Doug MacDonald http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/73632188 My favorite photo of the bunch! I'd love to know more about this "interesting biker wedding". What is the "plaster" comment? That one went over my head. The smiles in this image are just terrific. Great angle and well exposed for flash. Was the flash mounted on the camera? Despite the angle of the shadow suggesting a camera-mounted flash was used, nothing is washed out. 11 points out of 10 for this one. Bret Douglas http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/73632270 This guy/gal is scary. I'd hate to be the dentist looking after these teeth. Great focus and depth of field choices. I generally like B&W but I wonder if this one would have been even more striking in colour? I hope you took this photo through some glass and not in the open water. 9 out of 10. Marsha http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/73632285 I love sharp shots and this one is great. The nuts & bolts really compliment the teeth. Thanks for adding the explanation. I would not have known what this is. Interesting. Those teeth don't look sharp enough to cut anything, so I guess they have some other purpose. The silver colour and texture makes this an above average image IMO. Very nice. 7 out of 10. Paul Campbell http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/73632317 I said, "film" to myself the instant I saw this image. Film sure has it's own 'look'. I think that the look of film adds to this photo. My guess is that it would not have had such an 'other worldly' look if it were taken with digital. Good subject matter for B&W me thinks. Lots of teeth visible; probably the most of any shot (except possibly Marsha's) so extra points for that. My only 'criticism' is the softness. I know the DOF is extremely narrow but it's hard to find a really sharp point even on that second gear from the right. Scored 7+ Jim Kramer http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/73632325 "Alfred Hitchcock" should have hired you to take his stills. What a perfect image for one of his Sunday night TV shows from the '50s. (Opps! Showing my age, aren't I!) I think just a tiny, tiny bit more depth of field would suit my taste better than what I see here but that's probably just me. The concept is great with the shadow and all. It gives a very ominous feel. Another 7+ image IMO Mike Benveniste http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/73712450 You took my idea but I couldn't find the required equipment to photograph, so I opted for the horse instead. The oil bottle(?) adds a nice touch. Did you place it there? You win the bonus prize for the largest teeth photographed; no doubt the strongest too! The image looks a tiny bit tipped to me. Perhaps that's because the left side of the image shows more space above that side-flap than can be seen on the right side of the image. I'd have preferred just a bit more symmetry in this regard but I don't know if the physical situation there would have permitted this. A strong 7 Michelo http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/73734736 Whose the dentist 'cause I ain't goin' there!!!! Great shot, second place award IMO but the idea of a dentist allowing photos of his patients to be publicly displayed kind of freaks me out. Was the lighting just the normal dentist's lighting? This looks to me like it would fit the current chiaroscuro mandate too. The lighting and white gloves, along with the silver fillings, make this shot. Nice work. 9 out of 10. Al Denelsbeck http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/73765278 No argument about this being a photo of teeth, but whose/what's teeth? Was the subject live or dead? I'm guessing dead. If this is a skull, then the image is too creepy for me. The large 'canine' tooth in the back and the black background really make the in-focus tooth stand out. Nice work. I bestow an 8+ Until next time, I remain your loyal, hard- grading, heavily biased in favour of sharpness, not-so-intrepid reviewer --- Mardon |

PS I'd give all of them at least an 8. Mardon is a harsh grader but I suppose we learn from that. I couldn't even pick a 'winner' from the group, maybe Mike's bulldozer though I agree a bit more symmetry would be nicer... or maybe not. dentist I had the dentist take a shot of me with my cell phone camera... in Mexico... you ain't gonna see it!! : - ) |

I seem to be slightly off-true on a lot of my shots recently, and this one is no exception. And yes, I should moved a few inches back and over. I was trying to fill the frame for the maximum ultrawide effect and simply missed. My only excuse is that I was in too much of a hurry -- not only were my wife and a friend waiting in the car, but I was trespassing. In fact, a "Modern Continental" truck pulled up as I was shooting, but the driver thought it was my site and wanted to buy fill from me! The oil/transmission fluid bottle was as I found it. One other note about this shot, which I didn't know when I submitted it. The Pronea S was my "car camera." When I went to reload it after this shoot, the little tab which opens the film door snapped off in my hand. While it's a trivial loss financially, it's still a sad day when a camera dies. -- Michael Benveniste -- Spam and UCE professionally evaluated for $419. But I'm sure that was not the case. It had to be painful if you couldn't wait to be back. Unless you found was a modern dentist office for wealthy tourist. Michel |

This is precisely why I added the words about "the physical situation" to my critique. I've been in similar situations enough that I wanted to allow for the possibility that unseen factors might have influenced the composition of a shot like this. Now we know. ...it's still a sad day when a camera dies. Agreed. Sorry to hear about it. BTW, my wife was twice as tough on me when she critiqued my critique as I was when I critiqued the photos. She put your submission in 1st place! |

Thanks for the explanation about the plaster and the link to the other wedding photos. Very nice work. You can certainly tell that they were enjoying themselves. It comes through in your images. |

I've always wondered what's going on in there while the dentist is working. I even suggested to my dentist that he put up a mirror so that patients could watch but the idea didn't fly. I think it'd be neat. |
