The list price of the Canon 70-200/2.8 IS _IN JAPAN_ is 280,000 Yen, whereas
the list price of the Sigma is 200,000 Yen. The Canon price in the US is
based on a Yen that was 25% (or more) cheaper than it is now. But new stuff
coming out has to be priced at current exchange rates. I don't know how long
Canon US/UK can play these "loss leader" games with their high-end
equipment.

Sigma now claims to be competing with Nikon/Canon in optical quality in
non-specialty lenses and pricing the lenses only slightly below the
Nikon/Canon prices. This was the story with the HSM version of their
24-70/2.8 last year.

I don't know if this will fly as a strategy. The older 24-70/2.8 was much
cheaper and very much a "you get what you pay for" product, but I never saw
a review that figured this point out and did a head-to-head comparison to
see if the new lens was all that much better, and every time someone would
ask about it on a forum, they'd get gobs of people describing the old lens.
Oops.
