You ought to read a newsgroup like rec.photo.digital.slr-systems, where you'll find plenty of camera owners who read and discuss reviews. -- Chris Malcolm DoD #205 IPAB, Informatics, JCMB, King's Buildings, Edinburgh, EH9 3JZ, UK [http://www.dai.ed.ac.uk/homes/cam/] |

Because that would be an honest, objective review of the cameras that have been manufactured so far? The review can always be updated when the problem is fixed. Given DPReview's very close relationship with Canon, I wonder whether other manufacturers would be given the same concession of DPReview withholding reviews of their products until they eventually get it to work properly? Still, if you generously sponsor a web site I suppose you might expect some special treatment in return. ------------- Same deal with Epson and their pet "life of print" researcher. The undeniable fact about anyone who relies on getting press releases and advanced notice - not to mention beta stage cameras is that they are bound to a contract or at the very least, a written agreement to "overlook" or not mention serious defects. It is this "early information" business that so distorts the landscape of the "review industry" it makes any review tainted with the smell of money. Sigma and their new SD14 camera are a point worth mentioning here. I used one of these for a while and can attest to their substantial improvement over the SD9. They are, in many ways, a seriously better camera than a 30D. I can't say about others but if the SD14 had a Canon or Nikon lens mount, they'd become an overnight sell out. What do DP review have to say about them? 0000000! Nothing! DP review can be relied on to publish the latest information about digital photo gear as provided by the manufacturers. In order to keep doing this, they have to compromise their "hands on" reviews with the knowledge that should they write an unfavourable one about the flagship from their largest financial supporter, they'll be back in the heap from which they rose. Doug Who cares? It's a foregone conclusion that the Canon 1DmkIII is going to get a "Highly Recommended". Why is anyone in suspense over this? |

If you don't trust DPReview anyway, then what do you care if they have reviewed it or not? Scott That's easy. 99% of the time his posts serve only to bitch/whine about the subject. He can't criticize the review until it happens and it isn't happening quickly enough to suit him to he's bitching and whining about that in the mean time! |

I trust they'll do the review acceptably from a test standpoint (so you can actually use their noise tests, etc) except for the focusing problem, which hasn't been corrected, which they'll probably gloss over. The encouraging thing is that at least four magazines have mentioned this issue, which shows some integrity. |
