Default What lens work with Nikon N80 AF-G system?

I'm looking into purchasing a replacement for the 28-80mm lens that
comes with the Nikon N80 kit; I fell and damaged the lens. There are a
couple around the $150-$200 price point that are a bit faster (f2.8 to
f3.8) made by various manufacturers (I recall one is Vivitar). They all
claim to work with the Nikon AF system. The advertising literature
always identifies lens for the AF-D, AF-S and AI systems, but I don't
see any AF-G lens other than the ones produced by Nikon. Has anyone
purchased one of thes other lens for use on an N80? Does it work with
the autofocus system?

Thanks,
Jeff Griffith

AF-D and AF-G will work the same on your N80. AF-S is Silent Wave and
is a great system but is only found on the more expensive models. I own
only the -D and -D S types as I have a FM2n and am thinking about
getting an F3 that I want to use the glass on. You may want to have a
look at the Nikkor 28-105 AF-D or the 28-100 AF-G as a replacement for
your kit lens. Myself, I told the dealer to exchange the Quantum Kit
Lens with the Nikkor 28-105 AF-D right in the store when I bought my
N80. Hey, I was on vacation in Oregon when I decided I needed it. No
sales tax state. Sorry, I only own and use Nikkor lenses so I can not
advise from first hand experience about the 3rd party glass. The buzz
though is to stay away from sigma and vivitar. Hopefully some others
will post their thoughts on this.

Do yourself a favor and pick up a Nikkor 50mm/1.8 prime for around $80.
This is one of the sharpest consumer lenses you can buy, it is fast,
and the price is a steal for what this lens is capable of.

The reason for no 3rd party af-g is i guess the lens being made for
multiple mounts, so removing the aperture ring is extra cost. In reality
you don't lose anything by having a AF-D vs AF-G lens. The AF-G really
is just AF-D with the manual ring removed.

There are no AF problems with the 3rd party lens and f(n)80.
