Default Circuit City vs Best Buy

For what reason? I have noticed the sales droids are becoming more pushy
these days.

I would never buy anything from a crap operation like Best Buy - however
I've prtty much stopped buying from Circuit City too.

For the exact same product? BestBuy generally has a slightly better

return
policy. if you don't like the product or it is defective. With regard to
price, you just have to compare each product individually.

Which is better?

Circuit City. They often have unbeatable deals, are usually competitive,
less crowded, and better customer service where I live.

Huh! I bought a Nikon CoolPix 750 or something like that awhile back right
before my honeymoon. Took it for 2 weeks to Hawaii...came back and many of
the pictures had a red-cast that I had to remove in Photoshop. I didn't
like this as it took too long. So I returned it to Circuit City for a
no-questions-asked full refund. I bought a cheaper Canon instead and no
longer have color cast problems.

The BB where I live in WNC has a very limited return policy: exchange for
the same item or receive an instore credit good toward future purchases. CC
return policy is refund with no questions asked.

BestBuy staff are not on commission, so service can be slow. If you

can
get
past that, the prices and return policy are good.

About 6 years ago, a friend of mine took a high end DVD player back to
BestBuy for refund. He had no receipt and actually did not even

purchase
the
item at any BestBuy (but he told them that he did). He convinced them

refund
his money even though that product was not in their product inventory.

He
told them it costs $1200 and they took his word for it. I am not

saying
that
their current return policy is that loose, but it is still probably

the
best
in the retail business.

I just shop at which ever has the lowest price on the item I want.

Maybe
some of you might get better service if you shaved and took a shower

once in
awhile. Since I am a bit more "mature" maybe the BB sales people pay

more
attention to me.

Another thing I do is to purchase on-line for in-store pickup and the

item
is ready and waiting for me at the customer pickup desk.

That's not a return policy, that is just plain STUPID.

If you want attention at a store, just yank out the old gold card and
wave it over your head....

I am not kidding that at one time BB had a completely insane return policy
(insane for them). I once returned a TV at BB for my boss with no box or
remote control and got a complete refund. They don't do that anymore.

If you by chance have a dedicated camera shop in your area give them a
chance, it may cost a bit more but the knowledge and service could easily
outweigh the savings, so stop in and check out what they have to offer and
don't be afraid to ask questions and then weigh it out for yourself.

Rick Q

That's true only if the knowledge and service at the dedicated camera shop
are actually better. I have been in many of them that hire low-paid high
school kids that know nothing about photography. They only know how to
write your name on the film processing envelope, but you have to make sure
they don't put the slide film in the C-41 envelope. They don't know anything
about megapixels and resolution except that more is better, and this little
camera is cute. And if you need something that isn't in stock, it will
take at least 3 months to get it, they want you to pay in advance, and they
want to charge extra for special ordering it. That is if they can't
convince you that the one they don't have in stock isn't any good anyway
when, in reality, they don't have it in stock because their credit with the
distributor is bad and they can only get the very low-end items in small
quantities. If you want to get your money's worth today, do the necessary
research, decide on the product that will meet your needs and budget, and
buy it from a high-volume dealer that has good prices. Don't necessarily
assume that the higher prices you pay in the small local camera stores will
be justified by their additional knowledge because that isn't always the
case.

Check out your local specialists shops before assuming that either of them
has the best prices. Neither has generally knowledgeable sales staff.

In our area I found that Los Gatos Camera in Los Gatos, California is
generally very price competitive with the big box stores and has people
working there who really know their stuff and care about the customers.

None of the Big Box places I've visited consistently meet that standard.

I will say that when I bought a television two years ago the Circuit City
staff was much better than the Best Buy staff, at least in the two stores I
visited. Of the two I would generally go with Circuit City, but give the
little guy a chance first!

John
