Are you acquainted with the magnificent hummingbird picture book from 1960 by Crawford Greenewalt? He was the head of DuPont, and had unlimited resources, including airplanes and helicopters. The book is filled with great Hasselblad shots, taken when the birds were temporarily caught, photographed, and then released. Each picture is printed on high quality paper and hand-tipped onto a page. He had a lot of money and help, but also had a lot of knowledge of the birds. I of course have a copy of the book, which I suspect is out of print. A while ago, there was a cheap Chinese reprint, where the photos were reproduced dreadfully. Again, your pix are very good. When you first mentioned the Greenewald book I looked for one and succeeded via an Amazon vendor. I got a 1960 first edition (sans dust cover), but otherwise unblemmished and perfect for $28. It has the single edge mounted prints. I find is it has the character of an old reference book and the style of the prints bears back to an older different time in photography (1953-59). That said it is an invaluable book and one I am happy to own. Thanks for recommending it. Again, your pix are very good. Thanks. One can only keep plodding up that learning curve that photography places in front of us. I am just happy to have such challenging subjects near at hand, even though they go through 20-30 Lbs of sugar a week. -- Regards, Savageduck |

None of that sugar is for human consumption in this house. It is just for those energetic, potentially diabetic, feathered children. I currently have 30-40 feeding here with the occasional swarm topping 100. Mostly Anna's hummingbirds (Calypte Anna) with one or two Rufous (Selasphoras Rufus) sneaking in. -- Regards, Savageduck |

How far away were those and what lens/camera? I'm guess your Fuji camera, but lens & eq. focal length? It's all in the EXIF data. The Fujifilm X-E2 (with 4.01 firmware) and the XF55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS @ 200mm. The range was about 12 feet. Manual exposure with a few variations for each due to using Auto-ISO: #1: 1/1250 sec, f/4.8, ISO 1600. #2: 1/800, f/4.8, ISO 1000. #3: 1/1250 sec, f/4.8, ISO 1600 -- Regards, Savageduck |

I am glad that you find the pix therein interesting, albeit from another generation. It includes pix of hummingbirds that I never knew to exist. Wasn't that long-tailed one magnificent? Since I sold my house in the woods, and moved to an apartment in a built-up area, I no longer have access to birds. It was nice while it lasted = 45 years. Good photo shooting, Mort Linder |

Hi, We currently have a severe epidemic of adult type diabetes in young children, caused mainly by obesity and excessive ingestion of sugars. After 20 years or so, many of these young people will develop blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, strokes, and leg amputations. This is a serious and rapidly progressing problem, and not a suitable subject for political jokes. As an example, a small can of Coca-Cola has about 7 teaspoons of sugar, but marked in grams, which most Americans do not understand. In plain words, too much sugar cripples and kills. Mort Linder |
