My last expensive Mac sold, used, after 6 years, for more than people pay for middle of the road Windows PC's and that cash offset the cost of this Mac which will eventually sell for more than ... well, you get the picture. Never mind the quality of the display on Macs that doesn't come with the "bundles" that are so appealing with PC offers. Never mind time saved by not dealing with Windows issues, one after the next. Never mind that Apple major OS updates are free. Never mind that there is a single flavour of Mac OS for all kinds of use. (None of the low value idiocy of Windows editions (home, student, professional). All these issue do not exist with this PC I'm using right now. And in Of course the issue exists: if you need the "higher capability" OS you have to pay more. With Mac you get one OS that is "higher capability" for all users. any case, after 6 years a PC is totally depreciated and you buy a new one. 500 Euro every 6 years is not much. In my case, after 6 years, I sold it for well over €500 . That was 5 years ago and that family is still using that Mac. "This" Mac I've had for 5 years and will easily serve me for 5 more unless there is a catastrophic failure. Quad Core HT i7 with 24 GB of RAM ... hmm, I could replace the HD with SSD to get a little more oomph and up the memory to 32 GB I suppose... -- “When it is all said and done, there are approximately 94 million full-time workers in private industry paying taxes to support 102 million non-workers and 21 million government workers. Another thing, a guy who works for Intel (he analyses defects in CPUs) told me that processors degrade over time, i.e. they age (at least those used in consumer products). Apparently over time CPU develop defects, which make them slower or might even cause them to stop working completely. If so, it's not a good idea buying a 6 years old computer. What can happen is build up of dust causes over heating, so the CPU automatically slows its clock and runs slower. Some articles also cite thermal paste degradation over time. Both can be rectified easily. Oscillators also "drift" over time. You would notice this as much as observers would note the effects of Special Relativity of cars driving on the Autobahn at higher speeds. -- “When it is all said and done, there are approximately 94 million full-time workers in private industry paying taxes to support 102 million non-workers and 21 million government workers. What I understood from that discussion is that the constant heat over time impacts the silicon of the processor. There are pretty tiny structures in the nanometer range which degrade over time, thereby impacting the functionality of the processor. This is from an Intel guy who analyses processor defects, so should be knowledgeable. -- Alfred Molon Olympus E-series DSLRs and micro 4/3 forum at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/MyOlympus/ http://myolympus.org/ photo sharing site |

Probably true and yet completely un-noticed as the effect is probably only measurable by people who look at such things closely. IOW, not worth consideration in the real world. Possibly worth consideration if one is building a 64,000 processor super computer. This is from an Intel guy who analyses processor defects, so should be knowledgeable. And yet we've built computers for the military that test in spec after 20 years of use - in very adverse environments. -- “When it is all said and done, there are approximately 94 million full-time workers in private industry paying taxes to support 102 million non-workers and 21 million government workers. This is from an Intel guy who analyses processor defects, so should be knowledgeable. perhaps so, but you're misinterpreting what he is saying. |
