Default The Kodalk recipe seems odd????

Hello all,

I have a recipe for Kodalk: it calls for 0.692 grams of borax and
0.145 grams of NaOH. Apparently it makes a one gram batch of said
Kodalk. I added the numbers up and in total this recipe makes only
0.837 grams of said Kodalk.

What's up? Am I missing one ingredient?

Thanks in advance

Larry Kriese

I think that what you're missing is that in chemistry, the weight of
one ingredient plus the weight of the other ingredient does not
necessarily equal the weight of the product. You need to actually
balance the chemical equations and figure out the molar concentrations
of each and work back to the answer. Put another way, adding one "gram"
of oxygen and two "grams" of hydrogen does not yield three grams of
water. You need to do the chemistry.

Is that for the octahydrate or tetrahydrate Sodium Metaborate? It is probably far better to buy `Kodak Balanced Alkali` in the first place.
